PFAS Destruction, Disposal Guidance Updated with New Data

The federal guidance outlines current approaches to managing PFAS waste, highlighting disposal challenges, evolving treatment technologies and the need to minimize environmental releases.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released updated guidance on the destruction and disposal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), outlining current science and management approaches for handling contaminated materials.

The updated interim guidance provides information for facilities, regulators and waste managers on evaluating disposal and destruction methods for PFAS-containing waste, with an emphasis on reducing potential releases to air, water and soil.

PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are widely used in industrial processes and consumer products and are known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks.

According to EPA, the guidance reflects the latest available data on treatment technologies and is intended to support decision-making on how to manage PFAS waste streams, including materials such as firefighting foam, contaminated soils and industrial byproducts.

The agency continues to evaluate disposal technologies, including landfilling, underground injection and thermal treatment, while noting that no single method has been identified as universally effective across all PFAS waste types.

EPA said it plans to update the guidance more frequently to incorporate emerging research and evolving treatment capabilities as part of its broader PFAS management strategy.
