AR Rahman brings Shah Rukh, Salman together for Asha Bhosle tribute

Stars to feature in ‘Asha Forever’, celebrating the late playback singer’s enduring musical legacy

Oscar-winning Indian composer AR Rahman has revealed a star-studded lineup for his upcoming tribute video for legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, with Shah Rukh Khan, Kamal Haasan, Salman Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar set to appear in the project.

Titled Asha Forever, the tribute music video has brought together some of Indian entertainment’s biggest names, with Rahman taking to social media over several days to thank each of them for agreeing to be part of the project.

Rahman first announced Shah Rukh Khan’s involvement on Sunday, describing his participation as a “heartfelt” gesture in honour of Bhosle.

“A heartfelt thank you to dear Shah Rukh Khan for graciously agreeing to be part of Asha Bhosle ji’s tribute music video,” the composer wrote on X.

The following day, Rahman announced Kamal Haasan’s participation, calling the veteran actor a legend who had enriched Indian cinema in numerous ways.

“A warm Thank you to the one and only Kamal Haasan for lending his support for the Asha Bhosle ji’s tribute music video,” he wrote, adding that having Haasan involved in the tribute was “truly special”.

Salman Khan was added to the lineup on Tuesday, with Rahman highlighting the actor’s affection for Bhosle and his generosity in celebrating her legacy.

“A heartfelt thank you to dear Salman Khan for agreeing to being part of Asha Bhosle ji’s tribute music video,” Rahman wrote. “Your affection for Asha ji and your generosity in celebrating her extraordinary legacy make this moment incredibly special.”

Rounding out the lineup, Rahman announced Karan Johar’s involvement on Wednesday. The composer thanked the filmmaker for agreeing to participate, recalling that their video call had been “truly special”.

“From celebrating music and cinema to giving a voice to generations of artists, your presence in this tribute feels especially meaningful,” Rahman wrote.

The project carries added emotional weight as Bhosle died on April 12 at the age of 92 following multiple organ failure. She was cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park Crematorium, with several prominent figures from the Indian film industry attending the funeral.

Part of Asha Forever was recorded while Bhosle was still alive, with Rahman having hoped she would eventually see the finished project.

The recording features Bhosle alongside musicians from London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where Rahman serves as Honourary President. The composer previously recalled that Bhosle had encouraged the team to keep the song fun and energetic during the recording, reflecting the creative spirit that defined her career.

Rahman and Bhosle shared a decades-long musical partnership, collaborating on memorable tracks including Rangeela Re, Tanha Tanha, Kahin Aag Lage and Radha Kaise Na Jale. Their history gives Asha Forever an added significance as a continuation of one of Indian cinema’s enduring musical collaborations.

A release date for the tribute video has not yet been announced. With four major figures from Hindi cinema now attached to the project, anticipation is building around how their individual connections to Bhosle’s legacy will feature in the final tribute.
