Tom Holland, despite being a global star, had a humbling experience when a football maverick ignored his dinner text.
He was none other than Erling Haaland.
The Odyssey actor revealed the rather embarrassing episode on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The host, finding the actor on his show, pounced on the chance to ask him about a post he saw on social media in which the 25-year-old sent a direct message to Haaland.
“Erling Haaland had no idea who Tom Holland was when he DM’d him and asked to hang out,” he said while quoting the X post.
“He doesn’t watch movies, so he thought he was a random person.’ Now, tell us the truth: did you DM Erling Haaland?” he asked the actor.
In response, Holland sheepishly said, “Yes. Yes, and I tell you what, that is, that is exactly the type of humbling experience that is important for actors.”
“You know, you’ll be like, ‘I’ll text him, I’ll take him to dinner,’ but not even a response, not an excuse, not ‘I’m busy tonight, I’m playing football,’ nada.”
Holland then explained why he felt the urge to DM the Manchester City striker.
He shared that during the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix last June, he thoughtfully looked at Haaland just across the paddock.
“I was watching Lewis [Hamilton] race, and I saw him,” he said, adding, “He was [in] like a hospitality suite across from me, and I just thought I’d shoot my shot. Send him a text.”
In a quip, the actor said, “I never imagined I would talk about it on live television, but here we are.”
But when Holland was asked whether he was still up for dinner with Haaland, the actor responded, “I don’t think he would have dinner with me after the other day.”
His reference was England’s 2-1 victory over Norway.
