Phil Collins shares major health update after surviving near-fatal alcohol battle: ‘Dark times’

Phil Collins, former Genesis member, opened up about his sobriety journey following a “dark” phase he survived because of alcohol addiction which nearly killed him.

The singer and drummer recently admitted that he has not drunk in three years after his alcoholism left him in a life-threatening condition back in 2024, leaving his family and kids in fear that he might not make it.

In the latest update during a chat with Prog, Phil said, “Physically now, I reckon I’m A1, 100 per cent. I’ve worked at it. Haven’t drunk for three years. I do physio three times a week, to bring me up to speed. All is good!”

Recalling the hard time he and his close ones went through, Phil noted, “I went through some pretty dark times. I was never ‘falling over’ drunk. That wasn’t it.

“It was just drinking ‘normally’, as one would drink water. I’d wake up, have a glass of wine. Watch TV, read a book, have a glass of wine. Some people’s insides can’t take it. Mine broke down.”

And his habit led him to worst organ conditions, Phil shared, “Kidneys and liver were waving the white flag. I was close to dying, and I hadn’t realised. I just thought I was sick.”

Now, along with his health, he is more focused on his music and detailed how he is working on his new projects.

Phil added, “I’m never gonna say no (to music) now. I’ve got my little studio still, and I’d like to get down there and just mess about and see what happens. There are some things I could finish. And other things which are finished. So it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.”

For those unversed, Phil was critically ill and remained hospitalized for seven months in 2024, as he earlier revealed he needed a 24/7 nurse at the time to help him manage his health and medication.
