Chief Election Commissioner Gilgit-Baltistan Raja Shahbaz Khan on Sunday vowed not to allow any attempt to sabotage the electoral process, stressing that all necessary measures were being taken to ensure peaceful, transparent and impartial elections in the region.
Addressing a press conference, Shahbaz Khan said additional election staff had been requisitioned from other provinces, as was done during the 2020 elections, to facilitate the smooth conduct of the polls.
He warned that strict action would be taken against violations of the election code of conduct, adding that notices were already being issued to individuals and groups found breaching the rules.
The chief election commissioner reiterated that federal and provincial officeholders, including governors, ministers and government officials, were prohibited from participating in election campaigns.
He said violations of election laws could result in fines, legal proceedings and other punitive measures under the relevant laws.
Shahbaz Khan also warned against attempts to incite regional, linguistic or sectarian sentiments during the campaign, urging political parties and candidates to avoid provocative speeches and maintain a peaceful political environment.
He said monitoring officers had been directed to ensure strict implementation of the code of conduct, adding that those spreading hatred and unrest would face action under the Pakistan Penal Code.
The election commission has also reissued a circular to political parties, reminding them of their obligations under the code of conduct.
“Transparent, fair and peaceful elections remain our top priority,” Shahbaz Khan said, while appealing to political stakeholders and the public to cooperate in ensuring a credible electoral process.
