The scheme will initially run on a pilot basis for two years. It is especially beneficial for manufacturers who do not yet have Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) certification. During this period, they will be able to experience faster clearances and reduced compliance burdens, helping them improve efficiency and competitiveness.Manufacturers who enrol in the EMI scheme must follow specific eligibility rules. Within the two-year pilot period, they will be required to obtain full AEO certification. An internal committee is currently working on defining the eligibility criteria, and public consultations will soon help finalise the framework. The government is focusing on trust-based governance and technology-driven customs processes. The EMI scheme aims to improve transparency and reduce delays in import and export procedures. By removing unnecessary barriers, businesses will be able to operate more efficiently and complete transactions faster.Advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will be used to simplify customs inspections. These tools will help assess risks, screen cargo efficiently, and reduce the need for physical inspections. This will minimise human intervention and enable faster, data-driven decision-making.As proposed in the Union Budget 2026–27, eligible manufacturers will receive duty deferral benefits under this scheme. This means they can delay tax payments, improving their cash flow and financial flexibility. The initiative will also encourage manufacturers to eventually achieve full Tier-3 AEO certification.Overall, the EMI scheme is expected to be a game-changer for Indian manufacturers. With fewer inspections, faster approvals, and flexible tax payments, businesses will benefit significantly. Starting March 1, this initiative is set to boost industrial growth and strengthen India’s position in global trade.
