Netflix grabs Wu-Tang’s secret album story documentary

Wu-Tang Clan, a popular hip-hop group in the 90s, has a superfan known as Cilvaringz, whose real name is Tarik Azzougarh.

A documentary about him, titled The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, recently premiered at Sundance, and Netflix is now acquiring the rights.

But it is just the start of a wild story.

Cilvaringz, a die-hard Wu-Tang fan, followed the group and eventually tagged along in the 1990s, to the point that he toured with them and was even mentored by one of the idols, RZA.

After joining the group’s inner circle, he recorded a secret album.

And named it Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.

The 31-track album, to the surprise of many, was produced as a single physical copy to test the value of music in the digital age.

Later, the single copy raked in a jaw-dropping $2 million at auction in 2015, making Cilvaringz’s work his most expensive yet.

However, the buyer was Martin Shkreli, a controversial entrepreneur later convicted of securities fraud.

This and other extraordinary events are captured in the documentary The Disciple, which will head to Netflix on Oct 16.
