The nationwide death toll from the year’s monsoon season climbed to 126 from June 26 to August 1, while the number of injured rose to 404, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The main cause of deaths, according to a report released by the NDMA on Saturday, was electrocution, followed by flash floods, drowning, and lightning, among other rain-related incidents such as house collapse and trees falling.

In a report released on Saturday, the authority reported four deaths over the past 24 hours due to rain-related incidents, including drowning and lightning, with Sindh reporting three of the casualties.

Meanwhile, a total of 16 people were injured over the 24 hours, with the maximum number of incidents reported in Punjab.

According to the report, Punjab recorded 47 deaths between June 26 and August 1, including 19 children. 295 people, including 68 children, were injured in the province during the same period.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) saw 55 deaths, the report said, with the province seeing 82 injuries.

In Sindh, five deaths and seven injuries were reported, while Balochistan recorded eight deaths and 15 injuries.

Over the past 24 hours, the authority said, four rescue operations were carried out in Punjab, rescuing nine people, while two people were rescued in K-P and five in Sindh.

Monsoon winds blowing in from the Arabian Sea continue to affect most parts of the country, according to the Meteorological Department, which issued a three-day weather forecast for Karachi.

The city saw light to moderate rain across various areas on Saturday; however, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the metropolis will see mostly cloudy weather on Sunday, with a chance of thunder and lightning accompanied by moderate rain in some areas.

On Monday and Tuesday, the sky is expected to stay cloudy with humid conditions and a chance of drizzle during the night and morning hours.

Regarding other areas of Sindh, the department said moderate to isolated downpours along with thunderstorms were expected at scattered locations in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Matiari and Shaheed Benazirabad.

It added that light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning was expected in Ghotki, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Kamber Shahdadkot, Larkano, Naushahro Feroze, Thatta, and Jamshoro.

The PDMA warned that the heavy downpours, strong winds, and lightning may damage weak structures during this period.

It also warned that heavy rains may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, and Sanghar, among other rural localities.

Tourists and travellers were advised to remain extra cautious and vigilant, avoiding unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
