KARACHI – Mir Raza Ali’s case has taken another turn. After his grave was exhumed, a medical board found gunshot wound entering from the back and exiting through the chest, a fractured sixth rib, heart injuries and multiple other wounds.
The 4-page post-mortem report, prepared by an eight-member exhumation board on August 8, 2026, finds injuries to Mir Raza’s head, face, neck, back, chest and foot. Most significantly, the medical board answered “YES” when asked whether the injuries listed in the report were sustained before death, citing extravasation of blood in the underlying tissues.
However, the board has not yet given a final opinion on the cause of death, reserving its conclusion until chemical, forensic and other laboratory reports are received.
According to report, a firearm entry wound measuring approximately 0.8 centimetres was found on the left side of the upper back, at the level of the sixth rib. The wound had irregular margins and showed concentric greyish-black discoloration. Beneath it, the sixth rib was fractured, with the report describing a comminuted fracture and multiple bone fragments.
The left pleural cavity was found filled with congealed blood, while the report also noted an impact on the fifth rib. The examination then traced the apparent bullet path through the chest. The heart showed two circular tears or lacerations, each measuring about one centimetre, while blackened musculature described as a bullet tract was observed on the posterior surface of the heart. A separate lacerated exit wound was found on the right side of the upper chest, measuring approximately 1.5 by 1.2 centimetres.
The findings provide a detailed picture of a projectile passing through the body, although the final forensic interpretation remains pending.
The report records several additional injuries to the head and face. A reddish bruised area measuring approximately 3cm by 0.5cm was found over the right frontal region of the skull. Another bruised area was observed over the right nasal bone, while a fractured tip of the nasal bone was seen on the left side. A deep bluish congested area was also documented over the maxilla, particularly above the upper front teeth, with congealed blood found in the surrounding tissues.
The examination further identified a diastatic fracture involving the posterior half of the left temporo-parietal-occipital suture, with congealed blood present in different sutures of the skull.
The report also notes bluish discoloration around the joints of the hyoid bone, although the cartilage was described as almost completely decomposed.
The exhumation was carried out at Rehmanial Masjid Graveyard under an order of the Court of the CJ & JM XXI, East Karachi. The board reached the graveyard at 10:30 a.m., identified the grave at 10:50 a.m., and began digging at 11:09 a.m. The body was removed at 11:50 a.m., with the post-mortem beginning at noon and ending at 1:15 p.m.
The report states that the remains were in an advanced stage of decomposition, with the features described as unrecognisable. Maggots were present across the body, while the brain matter had liquefied and internal organs were also extensively decomposed.
The report estimates the interval between death and the exhumation post-mortem at approximately 12 days.
The board also collected samples specifically for gunshot residue (GSR) examination, including swabs from the chest and back wounds, as well as skin and swabs from both hands. Additional DNA-related samples included scalp hair, deep muscle swabs, teeth and the left clavicle.
The exhumation has transformed the case from a question of what happened to a much more detailed forensic investigation into how the injuries occurred, how the firearm wound was inflicted and what the laboratory evidence will ultimately establish.
With a documented firearm entry wound in the back, an exit wound in the chest, damage to the sixth rib and heart, multiple head and facial injuries, and confirmed antemortem bleeding, the medical findings are likely to become a central piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
