Global Wildfire Crisis Demands Indigenous Wisdom and Policy Reform

Uncontrolled wildfires are destroying more than twice as much tree cover globally as they did two decades ago, threatening ecosystems and accelerating climate change.
According to an analysis by Charles Barber for the World Resources Institute, regaining control over global fire risks requires combining ancient land stewardship techniques with aggressive policy reform.
For thousands of years, humans relied on controlled burning to shape landscapes, clear underbrush and reduce the risk of massive blazes. Colonial policies systematically banned these Indigenous management practices over the last few centuries, leaving forests choked with excess fuel. Recent research indicates lands managed by Indigenous communities consistently retain more tree cover, store more carbon and suffer less catastrophic fire damage than surrounding territories.
At the same time, commercial expansion and weak land governance fuel much of the modern fire risk. Agricultural clearing, illegal land grabs and deforestation-linked supply chains intentionally spark fires that quickly spiral out of control during severe drought conditions.
Experts emphasize that fire cannot be entirely eliminated, as periodic burning remains a vital natural process for many ecosystems. Reining in destructive blazes will require restoring local authority over controlled burns while reforming economic incentives that encourage forest conversion.
