Gayle King’s ex-husband William Bumpus finally broke his silence after the news anchor detailed the moment she caught him cheating on her during their marriage.
William shared a lengthy statement to Page Six on Wednesday, apologizing to Gayle for cheating on her.
“My deepest apologies to Gayle, to our daughter Kirby and her husband, Virgil, to our son William and his wife, Elise, and to our three grandchildren, for the pain I caused decades ago,” he began. “Those actions were mine.”
William further said that Gayle “has every right to share what was a painful chapter that changed the trajectory of our marriage and our family nearly forty years ago.”
“I respect her right to tell her story, and that’s where I’ll leave it,” he added.
The attorney also expressed his happiness that he and Gayle “remain in a good place.”
Despite his past mistakes, William said he “remains endlessly grateful” to Gayle for giving him “two of the greatest gifts of [his] life.
For those unversed, Gayle and William share two children—daughter Kirby, 40, and son Will, 39.
The lawyer, who was married to Gayle from 1982 to 1993, admitted that he did not fully appreciate the TV star’s public life during their marriage, as he’s “a private person by nature.”
William’s statement comes just hours after Gayle recalled the devastating moment she caught the lawyer cheating on her with a good friend.
“I came home and caught him,” the journalist said of ex-William during an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast.
She remembered telling the towel-clad woman, “‘I can’t believe that you are here and that you are doing this. I can’t believe that you are doing this.’ And I even said, ‘I thought we were friends!’ It sounded so pitiful.”
