Egg Prices Hit New Low In Bengaluru As Middle East Conflict Halts Exports, Retail Rates Drop To Rs 5 | Food News

Interestingly, the drop in egg prices comes at a time when the price of chicken has increased by about Rs 50 per kilogram, which has disappointed meat consumers.

Amid the tensions in the Middle East, involving escalating conflict between countries such as Israel and Iran, egg prices in India have fallen sharply in recent days. Disruptions to transportation routes, ports, and air cargo due to security concerns and regional instability have halted exports to Gulf nations, flooding the domestic market with surplus eggs originally destined overseas.

India has been a major supplier of eggs to countries like the UAE, Oman, Qatar, and Bahrain, with industry estimates suggesting nearly one crore eggs exported daily to these markets before the crisis intensified. Industry sources say nearly 80% of eggs produced in India are typically exported to Gulf nations.

However, the current conflict-like situation in the Middle East has disrupted transportation routes and brought exports to a halt. At the same time, changes in food consumption patterns during Ramadan have also reduced demand in those markets.

Wholesale and Retail Prices Drop Sharply

The impact of the supply surge is already visible in Bengaluru’s egg market. Wholesale prices have dropped from around Rs 7 per egg to about Rs 5. In bulk sales, 100 eggs are now available for approximately Rs 500.

Retail prices have also fallen. Currently, eggs are being sold at around Rs 5.50 to Rs 6 each, compared to the earlier price of Rs 8 to Rs 9 per egg in the city. For regular consumers, this drop of nearly Rs 2 per egg has come as welcome relief.

The fall in prices has led to a noticeable increase in demand. Many households that had reduced their egg consumption due to rising prices are now buying more again.

Interestingly, the drop in egg prices comes at a time when the price of chicken has increased by about Rs 50 per kilogram, which has disappointed meat consumers. For many people, eggs are now becoming a more affordable source of protein.

Eggs are widely recognised as a nutritious food, rich in protein, vitamins and essential minerals. They contain important nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E and B12, along with minerals like iron and selenium.

A 100-gram serving of egg provides about 155 calories and 12.6 grams of protein, making it a valuable part of a balanced diet. Health experts often recommend eating one or two boiled eggs daily, as they support muscle growth, stamina, brain function and overall health.

Why Farmers Face Uncertainty?

While consumers are enjoying lower prices, poultry farmers are worried about the financial impact. The sudden drop in prices means lower earnings for producers who depend heavily on export markets.

Market observers say prices may remain low until export demand from Gulf countries resumes and transportation systems return to normal. Until then, the domestic market will continue absorbing the excess supply.

For now, the price drop has brought relief to consumers across the country, even as poultry farmers remain cautious about what the coming weeks may bring.
