Bowen Yang first role after ‘SNL’ exit finally revealed

Bowen Yang had been a recurring face at Saturday Night Live. But after his exit, his career took an unexpected turn.

And that is to Broadway.

Marking his acting debut on stage, Yang has been tapped as Mary Todd Lincoln in the comedy Oh, Mary!.

Meg Stalter previously donned the former first lady role; now the SNL alum will take it over, though briefly.

His portrayal of Lincoln will run through shows from Sept. 15 to Dec. 6.

Over the moon about his new role, Yang explained that his new collaboration with long-time friend and playwright Cole Escola became a source of excitement.

“My friendship with Cole has brought me many places over the years: late-night pizzerias, cross-borough social-distance walks, and a tough production of Les Misérables sung in Dutch.”

“But being part of their deranged and profound masterpiece, Oh, Mary! is my favourite one by far.”

“I will spend the rest of my life thanking them for the best Broadway debut a cis gay guy with limited singing ability could ask for,” he shared.

Meanwhile, he has worked behind the scenes on Broadway shows, such as serving as a co-producer on Titanique.
