ASHRAE Honors World Refrigeration Day Theme of Cool Intelligence

The global awareness campaign highlights how artificial intelligence and advanced controls improve refrigeration and heat pump system efficiency.

A global engineering society is joining international organizations and governments to recognize World Refrigeration Day by highlighting advanced technologies that improve cooling efficiency.

The annual awareness campaign, scheduled for June 26, features the theme “Cool Intelligence.” The initiative emphasizes how artificial intelligence, data-driven optimization and advanced controls transform refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems to operate more sustainably.

The campaign focuses on how cooling technologies support global health, food security and economic development. The 2026 theme explores how digitalization and automation combine with engineering expertise to address modern energy and environmental challenges.

To support the initiative, ASHRAE is promoting updated technical resources, including the latest editions of its refrigeration handbooks. The organization also maintains an online portal in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme to provide training materials and guidance for sustainable cooling practices worldwide.

Additionally, the society plans to feature emerging refrigeration technologies at its upcoming annual conference in Austin, Texas. Scheduled sessions will cover low-global-warming-potential refrigerants, commercial system redesigns, thermal storage for warehouses and compressor-free cooling methods.

The engineering society has supported the international awareness campaign annually since the event was established in 2019.
