America’s drinking water systems face dual threats to public safety and service reliability as aging infrastructure, emerging chemical contaminants and cyber risks strain utilities nationwide.
Decades-old water infrastructure across the country now contends with modern industrial compounds, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Federal regulators have recently moved to adjust enforceable limits for four PFAS compounds—chemicals associated with long-term health risks—giving utilities until 2031 to meet remaining compliance standards.
Data released by federal environmental officials indicates that tens of millions of Americans receive tap water from public utilities where PFAS compounds have been detected. Regulatory frameworks also remain in transition for educational facilities, where direct federal testing mandates for lead in school building water supplies face multi-year rollout timelines.
Beyond water quality, physical and digital security concerns are impacting access. A series of coordinated cyberattacks recently targeted water and wastewater utilities across multiple states, disrupting services for local community systems and prompting federal law enforcement and environmental agencies to issue joint cybersecurity warnings to utility operators.
Concurrently, large-scale industrial facilities and technology infrastructure, including data centers designed for advanced computing, are placing increased consumption demands on municipal water reserves. Public safety experts advocate for evaluating national water security with the same regulatory framework applied to electrical grids and digital networks to maintain public access and system integrity.
