Sandra Bullock recently revealed why she felt the urge to inform her children about her partner Bryan Randall’s ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) diagnosis before his death.
For those unaware, Bullock was in a private eight-year-long relationship with Randall and was raising three children with him, as she adopted Louis and Laila, while Randall was a father to a daughter, Skylar Staten, whom he welcomed from his previous relationship.
During her appearance on the SmartLess podcast on Monday, August 24, the 62-year-old American actress and film producer shared that her children already knew what her partner was going through.
She told hosts Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman that all three of their kids were “absolutely aware” because once there is a situation where you’re bedridden. We all have to go there. It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it.”
“Well, they could see. They have eyes, and they are very, very astute kids. Very astute, because they not only see the physical change, there’s a behavior that changes in all of us. You know, I’m hyper vigilant,” the Practical Magic star said.
Bullock went on to share that she connected Louis and Laila with a child therapist after Randall’s diagnosis in 2020.
She admitted to becoming a “manic” in her vigilance, as she was not only making efforts to the nurses “because anyone who’s had the privilege of having in-home care knows the cycle of nurses;” she also made sure Randall was “okay.”
Randall passed away at the age of 57 on August 5, 2023, after fighting with ALS for three years.
It is pertinent to mention that ALS is a progressive and fatal nervous system disease that destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to severe muscle weakness and eventual paralysis.
