Shooting in Midland, Texas, leaves 1 dead, multiple others injured

At least one person is dead and multiple others were injured in a shooting in Midland, Texas, Friday.

After barricading himself inside a building in downtown Midland, the suspect is now dead, the city wrote on social media.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said there were 11 victims in total, and that police established a perimeter and were asking residents to avoid the area. It was not clear exactly where the gunfire took place.

Blong said during a press conference that there were no confirmed details about the shooter, and that police used robot and drone footage to confirm he was dead.

The FBI is aware of the shooting and has Special Agents and Victim Services personnel from its Midland satellite office on scene, a bureau source told Fox News Digital.

The situation began in southeast Midland and progressed across south Midland, Blong said, before police were first dispatched at 8:03 a.m. local time.

Midland Memorial Hospital said it had received nine victims from the shooting, with four sent to the operating room and five considered stable. Three victims have been discharged, one is out of surgery and three are still in surgery, the hospital said in an update.

The hospital’s main campus went on lockdown for nearly two hours due to the shooting.

Andrea Mendias said she heard what sounded like a small explosion at the closed veterinary clinic next to the body shop where she works and saw a number of heavily armed police officers rush into the parking lot. Some appeared to go inside the building.

Mendias said she earlier heard what sounded like at least 40 gunshots.

Video from Mendias showed officers pouring out of the back of an armored police vehicle and police deploying robots into the area.

“Cecilia and I are deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence in Midland,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote on social media. “We are praying for the victims, their families, and the entire community.”
