Some fashion moments transcend decades, becoming cultural symbols rather than just garments. On the front row at Paris Fashion Week, singer Tyla stepped into that lineage with a striking look that revived one of couture’s most daring silhouettes: the cone bra.
Attending the Fall 2026 show of Jean Paul Gaultier, Tyla embraced the house’s rebellious heritage with a custom black dress that reinterpreted the legendary design once immortalised by Madonna. The result was a look that felt equal parts archival homage and contemporary pop-star glamour.
A Couture Nod To Fashion History
The cone bra has long been synonymous with Jean Paul Gaultier’s boundary-pushing aesthetic. Originally introduced during the designer’s Fall 1984 Barbès runway, the sharply structured bustier transformed traditional lingerie into an object of power dressing.
Tyla’s version reimagined the silhouette through a sleek, tea-length little black dress. Instead of a traditional bodice, sharply pointed cups replaced standard bra shapes, forming a sculptural focal point at the neckline. The exaggerated structure gave the look an unmistakable sense of drama while preserving the architectural precision that defines Gaultier’s design language.
Below the bodice, a drop-waist corset extended into the torso, detailed with vertical boning that elongated the silhouette. The structured panel then gave way to a pleated skirt that fell just below the knee, softly flaring out with the help of voluminous petticoat layers beneath.
The drop-waist structure and softly pleated skirt amplified the vintage mood while ensuring the look remained wearable rather than theatrical. By translating archival design into a modern evening dress format, the ensemble bridged decades of fashion history in a single statement piece.
Madonna’s Legacy Lives On
No conversation about the cone bra is complete without Madonna, who famously brought the design into pop culture during her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. Her stage costumes featuring exaggerated conical cups and corseted silhouettes transformed the garment into a symbol of unapologetic female power. Tyla’s look felt like a new chapter in that story.
The styling reinforced the archival reference while keeping the look contemporary. A sleek choker nodded to Madonna’s 1980s lace-heavy ‘Like a Virgin’ era, adding a hint of rebellious glamour. On her feet, Tyla opted for the iconic Christian Louboutin So Kate Pumps, the sharply pointed heels echoing the sculptural lines of the bodice above.
Together, the elements created a look that celebrated fashion history without feeling nostalgic.
