Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on citizens across the country to actively check and reclaim unclaimed financial assets, highlighting that more than Rs 1 lakh crore remains untouched in banks, insurance companies and investment platforms. In a detailed LinkedIn post, the Prime Minister shared key figures that have “startled” many, noting that these funds represent the hard-earned savings of Indian families.
According to Modi, Indian banks currently hold about Rs 78,000 crore in unclaimed deposits, while insurance companies have Rs 14,000 crore lying untouched. Additionally, mutual fund houses account for nearly Rs 3,000 crore in unclaimed investments, and around Rs 9,000 crore in unclaimed dividends remain unclaimed.
In response to this widespread issue, the government launched the ‘Aapki Poongi, Aapka Adhikaar – Your Money, Your Right’ initiative in October 2025. The programme aims to simplify the search and claim process for individuals and families, especially those who may have lost track of old deposits, policies or investments. To streamline access, the government and regulatory bodies have rolled out dedicated digital platforms for unclaimed amounts across banks, insurance policies, mutual funds and dividends.
Modi noted significant progress since the initiative was launched. As of December 2025, facilitation camps have been organised in 477 districts, covering both urban centres and remote regions. These camps, run collaboratively by government departments, regulators, banks and financial institutions, have already helped return nearly Rs 2,000 crore to rightful claimants.
Calling the initiative a “movement” that needs to expand, Modi urged citizens to check whether they or their family members have any unclaimed funds and to make use of the available portals and district-level camps.
He emphasised that forgotten financial assets can transform into meaningful opportunities once reclaimed, adding that the broader mission is to build a “transparent, financially empowered and inclusive India.”
