World Sleep Day highlights the importance of getting enough sleep for overall health and well-being. It will be observed on March 13 this year. The global awareness day focuses on the need to address sleep-related disorders, encourage healthy sleep habits, and recognise how quality sleep affects our daily lives. World Sleep Day also aims to raise awareness about the prevalence of sleep disorders and the importance of adequate rest for improving both physical and mental health.

World Sleep Day 2026: Theme

This year, the theme revolves around “Sleep Well, Live Better”. The World Sleep Society organised this project, which emphasises the need for quality sleep for physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as improved energy, productivity, and overall life quality.

Health Benefits of Proper Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for maintaining overall health. Experts say adults generally need 7–9 hours of sleep per night.

Some key benefits of quality sleep include:

  • Improved brain function and concentration
  • Stronger immune system
  • Better heart health
  • Balanced mood and mental well-being
  • Reduced risk of chronic diseases

On the other hand, long-term sleep deprivation has been linked to heart disease, obesity, diabetes and weakened immunity.

What is the 10-3-2-1-0 rule for sleep?

The 10-3-2-1-0 rule is a popular bedtime routine designed to help people improve sleep quality by gradually preparing the body for rest.

Here’s how the rule works:

10 hours before bed: Avoid caffeine such as coffee, tea or energy drinks.

3 hours before bed: Avoid heavy meals and alcohol.

2 hours before bed: Stop work and mentally unwind.

1 hour before bed: Turn off screens including phones, TVs and laptops.

0: Hit the snooze button zero times in the morning to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Experts say following a structured bedtime routine can significantly improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
