1. Start Slow and Gentle

According to Megha Bandhu, winter skin is often more delicate, so it’s best to begin with a mild exfoliant. “Start with a mild exfoliator and use it sparingly, about once a week,” she advises. “Gradually increase the frequency if your skin tolerates it well, but avoid daily exfoliation to protect the skin barrier.” Paridhi Goel also suggests using a mild chemical exfoliant, like one containing lactic acid or PHAs (polyhydroxy acids), which are gentle on sensitive winter skin. Unlike harsh scrubs, these gentle exfoliants ease away dry, flaky patches without causing irritation.

For those who prefer natural options, Goel recommends a DIY milk and honey mask for gentle exfoliation and hydration. “This natural combo exfoliates and hydrates without stripping the skin, making it ideal for the winter season,” she says.

2. Moisturize Immediately After Exfoliating

Exfoliating makes the skin more receptive to hydration, so applying a rich moisturizer afterward is essential to lock in moisture. Bandhu suggests using products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or natural oils, which nourish deeply and keep skin soft. Goel adds that a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid or squalane is a great follow-up to exfoliation, as it can help prevent winter dryness from setting in.

3. Avoid Exfoliating on Irritated or Dry Skin

If your skin is already red, irritated, or overly dry, Bandhu advises holding off on exfoliating until it has returned to a healthier state. “Exfoliating on compromised skin can worsen sensitivity and lead to discomfort,” she explains. Instead, focus on hydrating and soothing your skin before reintroducing exfoliation.

4. Use Milder Acids in Winter

For Bandhu, winter is a time to limit the use of strong exfoliating acids, like high-concentration glycolic acid, which can be overly harsh on winter-sensitive skin. She recommends opting for milder AHAs, such as lactic acid, which provides gentle exfoliation while also hydrating the skin. This approach delivers the benefits of exfoliation without the risk of over-drying.

Winter exfoliation is best done at night, says Bandhu, as it allows the skin to recover away from environmental stressors like wind and cold. By exfoliating in the evening, you give your skin time to absorb nourishing serums and moisturizers overnight, maximizing the effectiveness of your skincare routine.

Goel stresses the importance of wearing SPF even in winter, as exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage. “Look for a nourishing, creamy SPF that protects and hydrates,” she advises. Despite the cold, UV rays can still cause harm, so applying SPF after exfoliating is crucial to shield your skin.

DIY Winter-Friendly Exfoliating Masks

Goel and Bandhu also share a few gentle DIY mask recipes to incorporate into your winter skincare routine:

  • Honey and Oatmeal Scrub: Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon of finely ground oatmeal. Gently massage onto damp skin and leave on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. This mask softens and smooths the skin.
  • Yogurt and Banana Enzyme Mask: Blend half a banana with 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt. The lactic acid in yogurt and enzymes in banana gently exfoliate while providing moisture.
  • Brown Sugar and Olive Oil Scrub: Combine 1 tablespoon of brown sugar with 1 tablespoon of olive oil for a mild physical exfoliant. This scrub is ideal for tougher areas like elbows and knees.

Winter Exfoliation for Different Skin Types

Bandhu suggests tailoring your exfoliation routine based on your skin type:

  • Dry Skin: Stick to gentle, hydrating exfoliants like lactic acid or enzyme-based products. Limit exfoliation to once a week, and follow up with a rich moisturizer to prevent dryness.
  • Oily or Combination Skin: Those with oily or combination skin can benefit from slightly stronger exfoliants, such as salicylic acid or gentle physical scrubs, to help prevent clogged pores. However, avoid over-exfoliating, as this can cause excess dryness.
  • Sensitive Skin: For sensitive skin, enzyme-based exfoliants or very mild physical scrubs are best. Choose products with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile, and avoid exfoliating more than once every two weeks to prevent irritation.
