When Is International Men’s Day 2024? Date, Theme, History, And Mental Illness In Men


International Men’s Day, observed on November 19, is dedicated to appreciate the contributions of men to society. It highlights their achievements and the challenges they face. International Men’s Day: History

International Men’s Day was founded in 1999 by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh from Trinidad and Tobago. He chose November 19 to honour his father’s birthday. Since its creation, the day has grown in popularity and is now observed around the world.

The main purpose of this day is to highlight the positive contributions of men while raising awareness about the challenges they face regarding their health and well-being.

International Men’s Day 2024 Theme

International Men’s Day theme for 2024, “Positive Male Role Models,” emphasizes the need to promote open discussions about men’s mental health and create supportive spaces where men can flourish.

International Men’s Day: Significance

International Men’s Day is an important day because it provides a chance to celebrate the positive roles men play in families, communities and workplaces. It raises awareness about the need to focus on men’s mental and physical health. The day also addresses issues like toxic masculinity, gender stereotypes and the pressures men face in society. It encourages equality by supporting men’s rights and responsibilities.

Mental Illness In Men

Men are often less likely to be diagnosed with mental health disorders than women, mainly due to societal pressures. These pressures lead men to avoid asking for help, making it harder for them to acknowledge their struggles. As a result, many men go without treatment and mental health issues remain undiagnosed. Here are the five of the most common male mental health disorders.

Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health issues among men. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in US, about 5.5% of young men experience depression but it is recognised less frequently than in women. Symptoms can include aggression, risky behavior, substance abuse, physical problems like headaches and changes in appetite, sleep or focus, along with persistent fatigue and obsessive thoughts.

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are common among men and can include conditions like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety and phobias. While women are more likely to experience certain types of anxiety, men are still affected in significant ways.

Symptoms include excessive worry, restlessness, sleep issues, physical discomfort like muscle tension or headaches and avoiding situations that trigger anxiety. Anxiety in men can also be linked to substance use disorder and ADHD.

Substance Use Disorder

Substance use disorder is a major concern for men with young men more likely to use drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with mental health issues. Men drink nearly twice when compared to women and they experience higher rates of alcohol-related deaths.

This behaviour is often seen as socially acceptable, making it harder to identify as a sign of a deeper problem. Symptoms include trouble at work, sleep issues, weight changes and engaging in risky behaviours.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common mental health issue for men, often caused by trauma such as accidents, assault or witnessing violence.

Symptoms can include flashbacks of traumatic events, panic attacks, nightmares, insomnia, irritability, emotional numbness, suicidal thoughts and avoidance of trauma triggers.

Treatment

Getting treatment for mental health issues is an important step toward feeling better, even though many men may avoid it. Treatment can help manage symptoms and improve daily life.

Options include therapy, medication, making positive lifestyle changes and having support from friends or groups. These steps can help men take control of their mental health and begin to heal.
