Global Cues
Overnight, Wall Street closed lower after a New York Fed survey indicated weakening consumer expectations alongside higher inflation projections. The report drew heightened attention as the ongoing partisan standoff in Congress has prolonged the US government shutdown into its seventh day, triggering an official data blackout.
Investor concerns about a potential AI-driven market bubble also resurfaced following reports that Oracle’s cloud margins were below analyst estimates and that the company was incurring losses on certain Nvidia chip rental deals. Oracle’s shares slipped 2.5 per cent.
At the close, the Dow Jones fell 0.2 per cent, the S&P 500 dropped 0.38 per cent, and the Nasdaq declined 0.67 per cent.
Asian markets opened mixed, mirroring Wall Street’s weakness. As of the latest check, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.89 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.22 per cent. Markets in mainland China and South Korea remained shut for holidays.
In a separate development, the World Bank revised its 2025 growth forecast for China to 4.8 per cent from April’s estimate of 4 per cent, bringing it closer to Beijing’s near-5 per cent GDP target.
