Skin Feels Dehydrated? Expert Shares Simple Ways To Moisturise For Supple, Soft Skin | Beauty News

If your complexion feels tight, uncomfortable, or appears dull and lifeless, it’s a sign your skin is dehydrated.

Dry skin can cause fine lines and wrinkles

Skincare has become a major focus today, and rightly so. Your skin needs as much attention as your body does. Just like the body signals when something is off, the skin also gives clear signs; but we often just ignore them. One of the most obvious indicators is dehydration. If your complexion feels tight and uncomfortable or appears dull and lifeless, it’s a sign your skin is dehydrated.

Dr Aparna Santhanam, in an interview with The Times of India, explained the key signs that indicate your skin is dehydrated. She also went on to share practical tips on how to restore moisture balance and get your skin back to looking healthy and supple.

Here are some signs that your skin may be dehydrated:

1. When Your Skin Feels Squeaky-Clean, And Not In A Good Way

According to the expert, that tight, stretched feeling you get after cleansing isn’t as good as it seems. Over-cleansing often strips the skin of its natural oils, which weakens the skin barrier and leads to dehydration. This is why using a gentle cleanser that effectively cleans without taking away the essential oils is important for your skin.

2. Fine Lines

Fine lines around the eyes or on the cheeks don’t always appear due to ageing; dehydration can trigger them too. It’s important to nourish your skin with water-binding ingredients that help soften fine lines and prevent them from turning into permanent wrinkles. Dr Aparna advises starting your skincare routine with a hydrating serum, followed by a good moisturiser. She also recommends avoiding hot showers and harsh cleansers, as they can further dehydrate the skin.

3. Dull Skin

Hydrated skin naturally looks bouncy and healthy, but when hydration levels drop, the skin loses its radiance and elasticity. The doctor recommends layering hydrating serums and moisturisers to help lock in moisture. She also suggests using a body serum enriched with Vitamin E, as it can replenish the skin and improve its overall appearance.

4. Uneven Texture

Uneven or flaky texture is not just a dry-skin issue. People with oily skin can experience it as well. According to the doctor, when the skin becomes dehydrated, it starts producing more oil, which eventually clogs the pores. This is why using lightweight hydrating formulas is important to maintain balance and keep the skin healthy.

5. Over- Reactive Skin

If your skin has recently become more reactive or red, it could be an early sign of dehydration. Dr. Aparna explains that a compromised skin barrier allows irritants to penetrate more easily, and this issue is especially common among Indian skin types. She recommends incorporating barrier-restorative products enriched with antioxidants, as it can help calm inflammation and strengthen the skin’s defences. It is therefore important to note that hydration is an essential step in any skincare routine.
