At least two people are dead after a shooter opened fire at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas on Wednesday morning, police said.

The Dallas Police Department said that two people were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds after the attack, which took place before 7 a.m. local time.

“One victim died at the scene. The suspect is deceased,” the department said in an X post.

“The preliminary investigation determined that a suspect opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building,” the post said.

That initial statement appeared to conflict slightly with other reports. An ICE spokesperson told NBC News that the gunman shot three people, killing two.

The spokesperson also said that the three people shot are ICE detainees.

Deputy ICE director Madison Sheahan said on Fox News, “As of now, we know that none of our officers have been injured.”

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin also said on Fox, “We know that there were three fatalities, potentially detainees, not ICE law enforcement at this time.”

The Dallas PD statement noted, “This is an ongoing investigation.” The PD said it would hold a news briefing later Wednesday.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in an X post, “There were multiple injuries and fatalities” in the shooting.

“The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gun shot wound,” Noem wrote.

“While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”

Noem’s post originally stated that the shooting took place at an ICE detention facility, but she edited it to clarify that it occurred at a field office.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said in a CNN interview Wednesday morning that preliminary information suggests the shooter was a “possible sniper.”

“It’s just a sad time that we have to worry about violence against law enforcement,” Lyons said.
