Sensex Today: Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty50 closed lower on Wednesday as investors stayed cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy announcement later in the day.

The BSE Sensex settled at 84,391.27, down 275.01 points or 0.32%, while the Nifty50 closed at 25,758, slipping 81.65 points or 0.32%.

On the Sensex, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma and ITC were the top gainers. In contrast, Eternal, Trent and Bharti Airtel emerged as the major laggards.

The broader markets also ended weak, with the Nifty MidCap 100 falling 1.12% and the Nifty SmallCap 100 slipping 0.90%.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Consumer Durables led the decline, dropping 1.72%, followed by IT (down 0.89%) and PSU Bank (down 0.70%). Meanwhile, Nifty Metal and Nifty Media were the top performers, ending the session in the green.

Global Cues

Across Asia, equities were largely in the red. Mainland China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.91%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.49% as investors awaited China’s November CPI data. Japan’s Nikkei was down 0.29%, and South Korea’s KOSPI declined 0.28%.

In the US, markets ended mixed overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.38%, the S&P 500 edged down 0.09%, while the Nasdaq Composite posted a modest 0.13% gain. Investors are now focused on the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement, expected later today following its two-day meeting.
