In the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering allowing only 3 player retentions per franchise, while the existing franchises are demanding permission to retain 5 players. A final decision on this matter will be made soon.

According to details, the 11th edition of the PSL will be held from March 26 to May 3, 2026, with 2 new teams joining the league. To ensure that the new teams are competitive, the PCB will not permit the existing 6 franchises to retain 8 players this time.

Sources revealed that during a recent meeting, officials proposed a 3-player retention limit per franchise.

The franchises understand that releasing players is necessary to help build the new teams, but at the same time, they do not want to lose star players who have become closely associated with their fan bases. Therefore, they have suggested allowing 5 player retentions instead.

The PCB has not yet made a final decision on this issue. It is worth noting that when the sixth team, Multan Sultans, joined the league, franchises were allowed to retain 10 players.

Sources further said that officials are confident that the addition of two new teams (making it eight in total) will not affect the overall quality of the league. Pakistan has a large pool of talented players, and many young cricketers have showcased their abilities this year. Likewise, several foreign stars are eager to participate in the PSL.

For instance, English all-rounder Chris Woakes, who retired from international cricket in September after being left out of the Ashes squad, could be seen in action during the PSL. Officials also tried to bring New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry into the league, but he has already signed a contract with the IPL.
