OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Voice Service Over Phone: Limited Features and Access | The Express Tribune

OpenAI has introduced a new voice-based version of its ChatGPT service, allowing users to interact with the artificial intelligence chatbot over the phone.

By dialing 1-800-242-8478 in the US or messaging the number via WhatsApp, users can access the chatbot without needing to download the app or have high-speed internet access.

This new service, announced on Wednesday, provides users with 15 minutes of free calling time per month.

The voice interaction with ChatGPT, however, is limited compared to the full app experience. While users can ask questions and receive answers—such as a recipe for chocolate chip cookies or a summary of the Civil War—the chatbot’s responses are not as personalized as those on the app.

The feature is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” campaign, launched in December 2024, and was built in just a few weeks.

OpenAI has acknowledged concerns about the chatbot’s voice technology, raising questions about how users may become too dependent on its human-like voice. The company also provides users with a disclaimer on privacy policies and terms of use, noting that it may review data for safety purposes.

Before speaking with ChatGPT over the phone, users agree to these terms, which include consent for OpenAI to record or keep voice data.

Despite growing competition from companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Elon Musk’s xAI, OpenAI is pushing forward with innovations, such as this voice-based feature, to expand its reach. The company is also focused on its long-term goal of profitability. In October, OpenAI completed a record-breaking $6.6 billion funding round, increasing its valuation to $157 billion.

When asked about its future profitability, the chatbot responded optimistically, stating that OpenAI plans to eventually turn a profit, although it noted it does not handle financial matters directly.
