Linear regression coefficients for bandpass-filtered AMOC anomalies (Sv; color shadings) on the bandpass-filtered NAO index in the winter season during 1972–2018. The AMOC at each latitude has been defined as the maximum of the meridional overturning streamfunction in the density space during the winter season. The lags on the x axis indicate the number of years by which the winter NAO leads the AMOC anomalies. Black contours enclose the coefficients that are statistically significant against the null hypothesis of coefficients equal to zero at the 90% confidence level.
