New Members Appointed to Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee
Seven technical experts will provide scientific guidance to the agency on national air quality standards through 2028.
The U.S. EPA announced the selection of new members to the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, tasking the group with providing technical advice on federal air quality regulations.
The reconstituted committee, which consists of a chair and six members, is responsible for reviewing the research used to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards. These standards establish limits for specific air pollutants to protect public health and the environment.
Dr. Louis Anthony Cox Jr. of Cox Associates LLC will serve as the committee chair. The appointment marks a shift in the committee’s composition, as the agency included two members from state-level air pollution control agencies.
The newly appointed members include:
- Dr. Brian Joondeph, Colorado Retina Associates PC
- Dr. Fotios-Christos Kafantaris, Indiana Department of Environmental Management
- Katherine Kistler, Nucor Corp.
- Dr. Sabine Lange, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
- Dr. Sidney Marlborough, Orion Engineered Carbons LLC
- Dr. Stanley Young, CGStat
Established under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, the committee functions as an independent body to ensure the agency receives evidence-based recommendations on atmospheric science and public health risks.
The members will serve two-year terms effective through 2028. Their primary focus will be assisting the agency in determining whether to retain or revise existing standards for pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide.
The selection process for this term began in May 2025 with a public solicitation for nominations, followed by the renewal of the committee’s charter in August 2025.
