Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with Iranian Ambassador Dr. Raza Amiri Moghadam in Lahore. Iranian Consul General in Lahore, Mehran Mohebid Far, was also present.
The PML-N leadership warmly welcomed the ambassador and consul general. Discussions focused on bilateral relations, regional affairs, energy cooperation, and trade promotion. Both sides agreed to elevate Pakistan-Iran relations to new heights.
Nawaz Sharif recalled the historic ties between the two countries, noting that Iran’s President was a visionary and respected leader. He expressed his desire to take relations with Iran to the highest possible level, highlighting Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran during difficult times, including war. He also praised Iran’s spiritual leadership and cultural affinity with Pakistan, mentioning how Iranians affectionately refer to Allama Iqbal as “Iqbal Lahori.”
On Iran’s victory against Israel, Nawaz Sharif said Pakistanis warmly congratulate their Iranian brothers. He also remarked that Pakistan’s economic situation is improving by the grace of Allah, adding that previous governments had strained ties with neighbors, which his party now seeks to repair.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif described the recent visit of Iran’s President as a milestone in strengthening bilateral partnership. She acknowledged Iran’s support during Pakistan’s devastating floods, stressing that Punjab’s timely measures saved thousands of lives despite heavy losses. She further noted her personal interest in Persian studies and underlined the deep-rooted historical and cultural bonds between the two nations.
Ambassador Dr. Raza Amiri Moghadam said that Pakistan and Iran’s economic, trade, and cultural relations are strengthening with time, and Lahore has emerged as the first stop for Iranian delegations, serving as a regional hub. He praised CM Maryam Nawaz’s initiatives in tourism and culture, noting they were drawing people to Punjab.
He announced that Iran would celebrate Iqbal Day on November 9, and an Iranian musical band would visit Pakistan. Over 300 Iranian students are studying in Pakistani universities, he said, adding that they hold Nawaz Sharif in great respect.
The ambassador commended Pakistan’s stance on Gaza and lauded CM Maryam Nawaz’s relief efforts during the floods, describing her as a leader admired by the Iranian people.
He further shared that when the government took office, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves stood at only $3 billion, but now exceed $20 billion, while inflation has dropped from 40 percent to below 5 percent.
He urged for greater promotion of the Persian language in Punjab’s universities to further strengthen cultural linkages.
