British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, in Riyadh on Monday for the World Economic Forum, said there was a potential deal for a “sustained” 40-day Gaza cease-fire; the deal could also include the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and “potentially thousands” of Palestinians in Israel. “I hope Hamas … take this deal,” Cameron said, describing the cease-fire offer as “very generous.” Also in Riyadh, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said “the most effective way to address the humanitarian crisis, to alleviate the suffering … is to get a cease-fire and the hostages home.” He added that in the meantime, the United States would insist Israel take “specific, concrete and measurable steps” to better protect civilians, improve humanitarian conditions and keep aid workers safe.
