Martha Stewart was scared of Matthew McConaughey once when they filmed together.
The lifestyle mogul opened up about working with the Interstellar star on a 2025 Super Bowl commercial during the March 11 episode of The Martha Stewart Podcast, admitting to guest Kate Hudson that she was caught off guard by his method acting approach.
“He got me scared actually,” Stewart confessed. “Oh my God, yeah, he scared me.”
McConaughey, known for fully immersing himself in his roles, had to take on 10 different characters in the ad.
“He is a method actor,” Stewart explained. “He had to play 10 characters, and he got into each character, it takes him about fifteen minutes.”
Hudson, who starred alongside McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fool’s Gold, immediately knew what Stewart was talking about.
“And he’d make weird sounds,” she recalled.
Stewart, still amused by the experience, agreed.
“He’s grunting and breathing and jumping,” she said, as Hudson playfully mimicked the noises in the background. “And that scared me.”
Hudson reassured her that the actor’s unique prep style just takes some getting used to.
“You get used to it after like the first couple of weeks,” she laughed. Stewart, clearly entertained by the thought, quipped, “You probably just wanted to tell him to shut the hell up.”
Despite the on-set surprises, Stewart came away with admiration for McConaughey’s dedication.
Hudson also praised her former co-star, saying, “McConaughey is one of the most fun people to work with for me because energetically we’re both very competitive, so we have this thing when we’re working together that’s really fun.”
She also complimented his “flirtatious” energy, while Stewart summed it up simply: “Boy, he’s fabulous.”
Even if his grunting had her questioning everything, it seems McConaughey still left a lasting impression on Stewart—method acting and all.
