Very few people are aware of the grafting method in horticulture, yet it offers several benefits. The technique involves joining the stem or branch of one plant to the rootstock of another, allowing them to grow as a single unit.

Experts say this makes it possible to cultivate multiple good varieties on a single plant, making the method highly useful for fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Dr Kamlesh Ahirwar, a horticulture expert posted at Naugaon Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, explains that grafting involves joining the upper part of the same species or closely related plants to the root system of another plant. This way, one plant can yield several desirable varieties.

Grafting In Fruits

Taking mango as an example, Dr Ahirwar says that if grafting is done on the Amrapali variety, it has to be of the same variety. In fruit plants, grafting across different trees or species is not possible. For instance, grafting lemon or guava onto a mango plant cannot be done, nor can grafting of different mango varieties on the same tree.

Potato And Tomato Grafting

While fruit grafting has its limitations, vegetables offer more possibilities. Dr Ahirwar notes that tomato and potato can be grafted together successfully, allowing farmers to grow both on the same plant.

Three Roses In One Plant

The method is also popular in flowers. According to Dr Ahirwar, different varieties of roses can be grafted together. For example, red, yellow, and white roses can all grow on a single rose plant using this technique.
