ITR Filing Last Date 2025: The ITR deadline for the assessment year 2025-26 has arrived, and the income tax department has also rubbished the rumours of any deadline extension. So, income tax experts advise taxpayers to file the return today itself and avoid expecting any due date extension beyond September 15, 2025. Here’s why you must file your income tax return (ITR) today, and what happens if you miss today’s deadline.
ITR Filing Last Date 2025: Who Needs To File Today?
Usually, the ITR filing deadline every year is July 31. However, as the income tax department released the ITR forms late due to various changes in the forms, the government extended the deadline till September 15. Now, the deadline is September 15, 2025, for non-audit taxpayers, including most salaried individuals, pensioners, NRIs, and those whose accounts do not require audit.

Filing after the due date has several downsides:
Late Fee: Under Section 234F, a penalty of Rs 5,000 applies if you file after September 15 but before December 31. For those with an income below Rs 5 lakh, the fine is capped at Rs 1,000.
Interest on Tax: If you still have unpaid tax, interest at 1% per month becomes payable under Sections 234A, 234B and 234C.
Loss of Carry-Forward Benefits: Losses from business, trading or property cannot be carried forward if the return is filed after late.
Refund Delays: Those expecting refunds will have to wait longer.
Department Scrutiny: Non-compliance can invite notices and tighter checks from the income tax department.
ITR Filing Last Date 2025: How Many ITRs Have Been Filed So Far?
According to the income tax portal, a total of 6.7 crore ITRs have been filed till 10:35 am on Monday, September 15. Out of this, 6.03 crore ITRs have been verified by the taxpayers, and over 4 crore returns have been processed by the income tax department.
Last year, by July 31, 2024, 7.6 crore ITRs had been submitted.
Calls For ITR Deadline Extension Grow
Professional bodies, including the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), ICAI’s Central India Regional Council and the Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA), have written to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), citing portal glitches, delayed utilities, floods in parts of the country and festive season pressures as reasons why more time is needed.
Many tax practitioners have also taken to social media, flagging difficulties in filing and warning that the last-minute rush could lead to widespread non-compliance.
However, the income tax department has denied any rumours about the ITR deadline extension and said, “A fake news is in circulation stating that the due of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025. The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025.”
It added that taxpayers are advised to rely only on official updates. “To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X,” the Income Tax India said in a post on X.
