IT giant Infosys has terminated 30-45 trainees at its Mysuru campus on March 26 after they did not clear internal assessments, as per a Moneycontrol report.
However, the Bengaluru-based company is offering affected trainees an alternative career path, including a 12-week training program for potential roles in Infosys’ Business Process Management (BPM) unit, the report further stated,
This move comes two months after Infosys terminated around 350 trainees from the same campus—many of whom had faced onboarding delays of over 2.5 years.
Additionally, Infosys will fully sponsor the training for those who choose to pursue the BPM course.
According to emails sent to trainees, Infosys informed them they had “not met the qualifying criteria” in the Foundation Skills Training Program despite receiving additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, and multiple mock assessment opportunities.
As part of its exit process, the Bengaluru-based IT giant—India’s second-largest IT services firm—is providing affected trainees with a one-month ex-gratia payment along with relieving letters.
For trainees declining the Business Process Management (BPM) pathway, the company will arrange transportation from Mysuru to Bangalore and provide standard travel allowances for their hometown journeys. Those requiring temporary accommodation may stay at the Employee Care Centre in Mysuru until their departure date. All affected trainees must submit their travel and accommodation preferences by March 27, 2025.
Regulatory Clearance and Official Stance
The Karnataka Labour Department concluded its investigation on February 27, clearing Infosys of any labor law violations regarding the trainee exits. A source familiar with the proceedings told Moneycontrol: “These were strictly training engagements without formal employment contracts. Labor protections don’t extend to such training arrangements, making the layoff classification legally inapplicable.”
This determination followed campus inspections in Bengaluru and Mysuru by state labor officials, initiated after the Union Labour Ministry mandated an inquiry into the termination reports. The ministry had directed Karnataka’s Labor Commissioner and Labor Secretary to examine the matter and implement appropriate resolutions.
Throughout these developments, Infosys has consistently affirmed its compliance with established policies, emphasizing that assessment failures necessarily conclude training engagements for all entry-level participants.
