Nearly 300 kg of rotten goat and sheep meat was seized during a joint raid by Mangalhat Police
Hyderabad: A shocking food safety violation has come to light in Hyderabad after police uncovered a racket selling rotten meat to hotels and caterers across the city. Authorities seized nearly 300 kilograms of spoiled goat and sheep meat during a raid in the Mangalhat area, raising serious concerns about public health and food safety.
For many meat lovers, dishes such as mutton paya, boti, and chops are irresistible. However, few would imagine the disturbing reality that may lie behind the aroma of such dishes served in some eateries.
According to officials, a joint operation by Mangalhat Police, the Golconda Zone Task Force, and GHMC officials led to a raid on a shop named “A To Z Fish and Goaty Off” near Kisti Chaman in Mangalhat. During the inspection, authorities discovered around 300 kg of rotten goat and sheep meat along with animal parts stored in highly unhygienic conditions.
Police detained Mohammed Afroz (41), a resident of Amarnagar Colony, who allegedly operated the illegal supply chain.
Meat sourced From Multiple States
Investigations revealed that the accused was not sourcing meat locally. Instead, he allegedly procured spoiled or low-quality meat at cheap rates from states including Karnataka, Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir. The meat was reportedly stored for months in large deep freezers before being supplied to buyers.
Officials suspect that chemicals were used to suppress the foul odour typically associated with rotten meat. The accused allegedly convinced customers and hotel operators that the meat was fresh, selling it at unusually low prices.
Hotels And Low-budget Events Targeted
Police believe the spoiled meat was mainly supplied to small and mid-sized hotels, roadside dhabas, and catering services around the city. Authorities also suspect it was used at low-budget functions and gatherings. Because the meat was cooked with heavy spices, consumers often failed to detect that it was spoiled.
Authorities Issue A Warning
Golconda Zone DCP Chandramohan and Additional DCP B. Krishnagoud urged residents to remain cautious. They advised the public to avoid purchasing meat from unhygienic roadside stalls or unauthorised shops.
Meat sold far below market price should raise immediate suspicion, officials said. Residents were also encouraged to report foul smells or suspicious meat storage to the police or GHMC authorities.
Serious Health Risks
Doctors warn that consuming rotten meat can lead to severe food poisoning, dangerous infections, and liver-related illnesses. Vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly face particularly high health risks.
Following the incident, citizens have urged authorities to intensify inspections of restaurants and meat shops across the city and take strict action against those violating food safety regulations.
