Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, is a significant occasion for the Sikh community all over the world. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism.
According to the Nanakshahi calendar, the esteemed Sikh guru was born on the full moon day of the Kartik month in the Nanakshahi calendar. The day aligns with November in the Gregorian calendar.
This year will mark the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Gurpurab is not only celebrated across India, but it is also widely marked abroad in countries such as Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

This year, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5. As per Drik Panchang, the purnima tithi begins at 10:36 PM on November 4 and concludes at 6:48 PM on November 5.
Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025: History
Born in present day Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib in 1469, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born to Kaluram Mehta Ji Khatri, also known as Kaluran Chand Das Bedi, and Tripta Devi.
Acknowledged as the spiritual founder of Sikhism in the 15th century, Guru Nanak had a profound spiritual inclination from a young age. He often questioned societal norms, including inequality, discrimination, and certain unethical rituals and practices.
He is known for establishing the Sikh religion and imparting wisdom to humanity. The sacred religious text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib, is a collection of all of his instructions.
Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025: Rituals
Also known as Gurpurab, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with major rituals in Sikhism. On this day, gurdwaras are decorated with lights, devotees come together to sing sacred hymns and participate in langar. The festivities also include processions, or nagar kirtan, where devotees carry the Guru Granth Sahib through the streets.
Devotees read the Guru Granth Sahib continuously, called the akhand path, take part in nagar kirtan processions, and organise kirtan and katha meetings to sing songs and discuss teachings.
Langar Seva, a special community lunch, provides free meals to people of all faiths and backgrounds to promote equality.
Gurbani recitation, prayers and ardas all communicate appreciation and hope for well-being.
People also participate in kar sewa, which includes volunteer community service that reflects Sikhism’s essential principles and honours Guru Nanak’s teachings.
