The day holds religious and cultural meaning for millions of Sikhs worldwide. It serves as a moment to remember the life and teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, a leader who stood firmly for justice, equality and fearless faith.

Born in 1666 in Patna, Bihar, as Gobind Rai, he was the only son of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Mata Gujri Ji. His life took a turn at the age of nine, when he was installed as the 10th Sikh Guru following the martyrdom of his father for defending religious freedom. He guided the Sikh community with remarkable clarity through some of its most challenging times.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was not only a spiritual guide but also a poet, philosopher and warrior who spoke out against oppression.

A defining chapter in Sikh history unfolded in 1699 with the establishment of the Khalsa, a brotherhood committed to righteousness, discipline and service. The formation of the Khalsa gave the Sikh community a distinct identity and collective strength.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji also introduced the Five Ks: Kesh, Kangha, Kara, Kirpan and Kachera. These represent faith, discipline and responsibility. Before his passing in 1708, he declared the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru, bringing an end to the line of human Gurus and ensuring spiritual guidance for generations.

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is observed through prayers, kirtans and nagar kirtans, or religious processions, which feature devotional singing, community participation and displays of martial tradition. Langar, the free community kitchen, remains central to the celebrations, embodying the ideals of equality and selfless service.
