During a recent performance at a university in Karachi this week, celebrated singer Asim Azhar made headlines not just for his music, but for his staunch defence of his audience.
After a video went viral showing the singer reacting sharply to a man attempting to climb the stage, Azhar took to social media to provide necessary context and clear the air regarding the confrontation.
The singer addressed the incident via a social media story to pre-empt the spread of misinformation. He clarified that the individual involved was not a fan, but a member of the security team.
Azhar alleged that the bouncer had been repeatedly pushing women and teenagers in the crowd throughout the evening, an act he had been observing from the stage.
“There is a video going viral of me getting angry at a concert,” Azhar shared. “Before more misinformation is spread, I want to clarify that the individual was a bouncer behaving disrespectfully toward women and children.”
The confrontation peaked when the bouncer jumped onto the stage. When Azhar questioned him, the man reportedly yelled, “Dude, I’m a bouncer.” Azhar’s response was immediate and firm: “If you are a bouncer, then stay with them.”
And in a sharp rebuke, ‘Meri Zindagi Hai Tu’ singer told the bouncer: “Why are you coming here? Are they all crazy?”, adding: “You are not more special than my public if you are a bouncer.”
The singer reiterated that ensuring a safe environment is non-negotiable. While he admitted he could have handled the tone better — noting, “Maybe next time a little gently” — he insisted that calling out such behaviour is essential.
“But it was important too,” he added, apologising to fans for the emotional display while promising to always prioritise their well-being so they feel “safe, heard, and seen.”
