While summer causes problems like dull skin and dehydration, here’s how a nutrient-rich diet, mindful cleansing, and sun protection can transform your skin in hotter months.
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every 2-3 hours.
Along with the intense summer sun comes the innumerable challenges it poses for your skin. From irritation and sunburn to dull skin and dehydration, summer strips your skin of its natural glow. But achieving radiant skin during the hotter months isn’t just about what you apply on the outside; it starts from within. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet packed with seasonal fruits, vegetables, and skin-loving superfoods like almonds can go a long way in keeping your skin healthy, hydrated, and glowing all summer long.
Dr. Geetika Mittal Gupta, Skin Expert and Cosmetologist, shares her expert insights on how to care for your skin both inside and out during the warmer months.
Nourish From Within
While external treatments are helpful, we often overlook the importance of internal nourishment. A healthy diet rich in seasonal fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-dense nuts like almonds is essential. Include fruits high in vitamin C to brighten the skin and nuts like almonds, which are packed with 15 essential nutrients. Almonds also contain vitamin E, which helps protect skin cells from damage caused by pollution, UV rays and other stressors. Almonds also offer nutrients like zinc, copper, and linoleic acid, which contribute to overall skin health. Dr. Gupta also advises limiting sugary and fried foods, which can worsen skin issues during the summer.
Prioritise Sun Protection
Sun protection is a non-negotiable part of any summer skincare routine. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to shield the skin from harmful UV rays, prevent pigmentation, and reduce the risk of sunburn. For best results, Dr Gupts suggests reapplying every two to three hours, especially when outdoors. In addition, certain natural foods — like almonds and citrus fruits — are known for their sun-protective benefits. Incorporating these into your daily diet can enhance your skin’s resilience from the inside out.
Hydration Is Key
Hydration is vital for keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and include water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber to maintain your skin’s elasticity and flush out toxins. If you want to add a little zest to your hydration, toss in a slice of lemon for a refreshing taste. Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day and keep some electrolyte sachets handy too.
Cleanse Smartly
As temperatures rise, it’s important to switch out heavy cream cleansers for a lightweight, sulfate-free foaming cleanser that effectively removes sweat, oil, and sunscreen without stripping your skin’s natural moisture. Cleansing twice daily – morning and night – helps prevent clogged pores and keeps your skin feeling clean and refreshed. This is especially important during summer, when sweat and pollution levels are high.
Exfoliate with Caution
Summer is a good time to exfoliate, but do it gently and mindfully. Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote a brighter complexion. Opt for a mild chemical exfoliant once or twice a week. Be careful not to overdo it, as over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
