A deepfake video of Indian cricket star Virat Kohli, generated with artificial intelligence, has gone viral on social media, once again aising concerns about the misuse of AI technology.
The video, which surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) on August 27, depicts Kohli criticising his fellow cricketer Shubman Gill and questioning his abilities.
According to Indian media reports, the manipulated video shows Kohli stating that he has been closely observing Shubman Gill.
While acknowledging Gill’s talent, deepfake Kohli allegedly emphasises that there is a significant difference between being a good cricketer and becoming a legend.
The video also portrays Kohli praising himself, claiming that despite comparisons, there is only one Virat Kohli in the world.
He is seen asserting that he has faced the toughest bowlers, performed in extremely challenging conditions, and maintained his form for over a decade.
The video has garnered over 300,000 views on X, leading to widespread debate among fans and social media users.
Many were quick to recognise the video as fake, with some users expressing concern over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence technology.
“No matter how arrogant people may think Virat Kohli is, he would never say something like this,” one user commented.
It is important to note that deepfake technology is increasingly being used for cyber-attacks and is becoming a significant threat to the real world.
