What Is The Difference Between Curd And Buttermilk?

Curd and buttermilk are both dairy products, but they differ in many ways. The major difference between the two is the consistency. Curd is thicker, whereas buttermilk is more liquid. Not only this, but buttermilk is also less sour in taste than curd. Additionally, curd and buttermilk have varying effects on digestion. Dimple explains that curd is a heavy food, which means it takes longer to digest, whereas buttermilk is light and easier to digest.

What Are The Benefits Of Curd?

Curd is a great source of protein and vitamins B12 and D, making it great for boosting immunity and supporting bone health. Curd Vs Buttermilk – Which Is Better For Your Health?

Now that you know the benefits of curd and buttermilk, the question in your mind would be: which one is really better for you? According to Dimple, both curd and buttermilk offer numerous health benefits. However, buttermilk takes the lead when it comes to digestive health. The fact that it is lighter and contains condiments like cumin, pink salt, hing, curry leaves, etc., gives it an edge over curd. Whereas curd is warmer and heat in nature due to the presence of live bacteria, which start fermenting in the presence of heat in the stomach.
Hence, curd is not recommended for those who have a pitta imbalance, such as a burning sensation, acid reflux, psoriasis, or eczema. On the other hand, buttermilk is tridoshic in nature, meaning it is suitable for all three body types – vata, kapha, and pitta. Plus, it can be consumed during all seasons of the year.
