Apple announces launch date for iPhone 17 series

0

Apple, the technology giant, has officially announced the launch date of its new iPhone 17 series. The launch event will be held on September 9 at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, and is being called the “AV Dropping” event.

According to Apple, the iPhone 17 series will include four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and an entirely new model, iPhone 17 Air. This new model is expected to attract the most attention due to its ultra-thin design.

All phones in the series will feature A19 and A19 Pro chips, significantly enhancing performance and battery life. Additionally, the Pro models will come with a completely new camera module that allows high-quality photography even in low-light conditions.

Apple has also made significant design changes. The Pro models are being built with a stronger aluminum frame, while the iPhone 17 Air is said to be the lightest and thinnest iPhone ever.

The event will also introduce the Apple Watch Series 11, featuring advanced health-tracking capabilities. In addition, the Apple Watch SE 3 and Rugged Ultra 3 will be launched, offering satellite connectivity for enhanced support in emergency situations.

Significant upgrades are also expected in Apple’s AirPods, including AI features and improved noise cancellation.

Tech experts suggest that Apple may introduce new features aimed at making its products not only smarter but more “human-friendly.” Following this announcement, excitement among consumers and experts is high, with all eyes now on the September 9 event.

Breast cancer: Seven-week wait for some red flag patients

Some patients who have been red flagged for breast cancer assessments are waiting up to seven weeks to be seen in Northern Ireland.

The target set by Northern Ireland’s devolved Department of Health (DOH) – which oversees five health and social care trusts – is 14 days.

Judith Mullan, a nurse from Cookstown, who went private for an appointment said she was “frustrated” and “let down” by waiting times.

The DOH said work is ongoing with trusts to increase capacity through additional clinics and workforce planning.

BBC News NI understands that several breast cancer consultants are concerned that waiting times have spiralled since a new regional system for handling referrals was introduced.

The system was criticised for creating a postcode lottery network as, depending on a patient’s address, some were being seen more quickly than others.

Before its introduction, health trusts managed their own red flag referrals.

The target set by Northern Ireland’s Department of Health for patients red flagged for breast cancer to be assessed is 14 days

In May, all red flag referrals in the Western Trust were seen within 14 days, making it one of the better performing trusts at meeting its target.

However, within weeks of the regional system starting, some patients were waiting up to seven weeks, with the latest data showing 250 patients waited more than 14 days for a red flag breast clinic appointment.

More than 1,100 people across Northern Ireland are on a red flag list.

One health trust source told BBC News NI that the regional system was proving too complex to manage, with projections of waiting lists rising to 11 weeks by the end of September.

‘Something needs to be done’

Judith Mullan, a nurse from Cookstown, said she visited a GP after discovering a lump in her breast.

“I have quite an extensive amount of breast cancer in my family,” said Judith.

Judith’s GP red-flagged her for an appointment, and told her it would be a minimum of an eight week wait.

“When my mum had breast cancer, there was a delay in her surgery for two weeks.

“Within that two week period, she went from needing a partial mastectomy to having a full mastectomy.”

Worried that the lump might be cancerous, Judith took out a loan to go private, eventually getting an appointment in Dublin.

“I tried to go private in Northern Ireland but the lists, even in the private clinics, were six to eight weeks.

“The hospital in Dublin gave me an appointment in three days.”

Judith said she feels “frustrated” and “let down” by the NHS wait times.

“This has had such a negative impact on my mental health. How many people have to die? How many people have to sit and suffer?

“Something needs to be done.”

Judith added: “My two daughters are going to be facing the same dilemmas as they grow up. I just don’t want them to have to go through the same turmoil that I have.”

The Northern Trust said: “We very much regret that anyone is waiting longer than the 14 day target for red flag breast assessment referrals.

“We recognise, however, that the overall waiting time for those awaiting assessment is too long, and acknowledge the stress and anxiety this can cause.”

‘I’m in limbo’

Mary O’Hagan from Maghera, County Londonderry, was red flagged for a breast cancer assessment by her GP after discovering a hot red patch on her right breast.

When she was referred, Mary, who is still waiting for an appointment, was told the waiting time used to be two weeks but she could now expected to wait eight or nine weeks.

“When any woman finds a lump your stomach just drops”, she told BBC Radio Foyle’s North West Today programme.

“The first thing we think of is breast cancer, you think of everything that could be ahead of you, going home to tell your family and where you could be at in 3 months’ time or six months’ time.”

Mary, who swam an English channel relay in June, said that her current situation makes her feel “stressed”.

“As soon as I finish one thing I book the next thing, I’m kid of in limbo at the minute for I don’t know where I am going to be at in three months’ time,” she added.

“It’s shocking to think that early detection is potentially being affected.”

She said, “it’s obviously not working, maybe they need to get back around the table and have another look at this and get patients seen a lot sooner”.

‘Unacceptable waiting times’

The new red flag initiative was announced in May by Health Minister Mike Nesbitt in response to the “unacceptable” waiting times for breast cancer services in Northern Ireland.

The aim was to enable people from across all the health trusts to access the earliest appointment available to them, no matter where they live.

For instance, patients living in the South Eastern Health Trust have been offered referrals and screening appointments in the Western Health Trust including at the weekend.

Not all patients, however, are able to make that journey or a weekend appointment.

Nesbitt said that it was not acceptable for women in one trust area to have to wait significantly longer to be assessed than women in another trust area “so this will help address the disparities between the trusts”.

As the system has been operating for about three months, others have said it needs time to bed in and that summer leave among medics has also been an issue.

Sources have told the BBC some of the health trusts felt they were in a better position to manage the lists, but as some breast units were better staffed than others, this did not produce an equitable appointment system.

In a statement, the Department of Health (DOH) told BBC News NI while the regional approach aims to equalise waiting times and improve fairness, it does not in itself reduce the overall waiting time.

They added that it does not directly increase the number of appointments but significantly improves how existing capacity is utilised.

The DOH said they recognise that there is a core demand, amounting to almost 4 clinics per week.

To help address the demand, the DOH has secured £5m recurrent funding to increase HSCT’s core capacity.

The department said they will continue to monitor the situation closely and are committed to improving access to timely and appropriate care.

Solar-powered postboxes are being rolled out across UK

The new design features a rectangular solar panel tilted to the south

Royal Mail is introducing 3,500 solar-powered postboxes across the UK, altering the iconic look of the red pillar boxes that have punctuated Britain’s streets for nearly two centuries.

In the new design, solar panels on the top of the postboxes power a digitally-activated drawer, allowing customers to deposit small parcels.

Items as large as a shoebox can be posted in the pillar boxes, in what Royal Mail says is the “biggest redesign in its 175-year history”.

The change comes as Royal Mail is struggling in the face of competition from other delivery companies.

The firm, bought by a Czech billionaire in December, has been fined millions after failing to meet letter delivery targets.

After a successful pilot that introduced the new boxes in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, they will now be rolled out to other cities starting with Edinburgh, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester.

Two designs were trialled in the pilot, including one where the entire round lid of the postbox was black. Royal Mail said the firm decided internally that keeping the top red was more in keeping with the brand.

The new design that is being rolled out is topped with a grid of dark solar panels on a white rectangle, which will be oriented “due south for optimal sunlight”, the firm said.

It also features a barcode scanner, which opens a drop-down drawer that is big enough to accommodate parcels that do not fit in the traditional postbox slot.

Royal Mail said customers can use the service using the Royal Mail app, and can request proof of posting, and tracking of their parcel.

The company said it was “on a drive” to expand its parcel services and make them “as convenient as possible”.

The rise of online shopping means click-and-collect services have skyrocketed in popularity, with venues from local newsagents to petrol stations offering parcel send-and-deliver services. There has also been a proliferation of self-operated lockers in convenient locations.

“We are all sending and returning more parcels than ever before,” said Jack Clarkson, a managing director at Royal Mail. “This trend will only continue as online shopping shows no signs of slowing, particularly with the boom of second-hand marketplaces.”

An alternative design for the postbox is not being used more widely

The new postboxes are being rolled out over the next few months with Royal Mail hoping it will help shore up its share of the market.

“Our message is clear, if you have a Royal Mail label on your parcel, and it fits, put it in a postbox and we’ll do the rest,” Mr Clarkson said.

But it may not be enough to prevent rivals like Evri and Yodel, who often offer cheaper delivery, eating further into its business.

Online communication, combined with more competition in the delivery business, has already caused its first casualty among traditional postal services: Denmark recently ended its letter deliveries service, PostNord.

Royal Mail recently said it will start to deliver second-class letters on every other weekday and not on Saturdays to help cut costs.

Federal judge blocks Abrego Garcia deportation, extending court fight

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A federal judge in Maryland issued a court order Wednesday blocking the Trump administration from deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia from the U.S. until at least October, setting the stage for further court clashes with the government after he was taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody earlier this week.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis on Wednesday extended a temporary restraining order she issued earlier this week, which requires Abrego Garcia to be kept in the continental U.S. — and within 200 miles of the court in Greenbelt, Maryland — until she can consider the emergency motion filed by his attorneys at an evidentiary hearing.

She also set October 6 as the date for the hearing to take place, which both parties agreed to, and said she would rule on the emergency request in the 30 days after.

The update from Xinis keeps Abrego Garcia in the U.S. for at least five more weeks, blocking the Trump administration, for now, from deporting him to a third country such as Uganda.

It comes after his lawyers on Monday filed an emergency habeas request to keep Abrego Garcia in the U.S. for now until his immigration case can play out via the proper channels, ensuring due process protections — including the right to a reasonable fear interview — before being removed to a third country.

ICE officials notified Abrego Garcia’s attorneys late last week that they planned to arrest him this week and deport him as early as Wednesday to Uganda. The East African nation reached an agreement with the U.S. earlier this month to accept certain deported migrants, though details of the arrangement were not immediately clear.

Justice Department attorney Drew Ensign told Judge Xinis on Wednesday that the Trump administration objected to the court extending the temporary restraining order, though he confirmed in response to her questions that they would voluntarily comply.

“Your clients are absolutely forbidden at this juncture to remove Mr. Abrego Garcia from the continental United States,” Xinis had stressed to Ensign on Monday, in issuing the now-extended emergency order.

Also on Wednesday, Abrego Garcia’s lawyers told Xinis that they had filed an emergency motion to reopen his immigration case to seek asylum.

That request is outside Xinis’s jurisdiction, and was filed Tuesday in an immigration court in Baltimore.

Xinis had previously cited concerns over the lack of a known proffer from Uganda detailing what protections or freedoms Abreo Garcia would have in Uganda, compared to information provided by Costa Rica’s government, which had provided written assurances that Abrego Garcia would live freely in the country not be refouled, or re-deported, to El Salvador.

Justice Department officials had offered Abrego Garcia the option of being removed to Costa Rica last week, as part of a plea deal in exchange for securing his guilty plea on criminal charges related to human smuggling in Tennessee.  He declined.

Your guide to the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce engagement

0

A bejeweled Taylor Swift broke Instagram records Tuesday as the pop star and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce announced their engagement in a joint post.

Fans have been eager to learn everything they can about the engagement into the lead-up to this TBD white veil occasion.

Here’s what we know so far about your English teacher and gym teacher’s engagement:

When did Swift and Kelce get engaged?

The couple announced their engagement on Aug. 26, 13 days after Swift’s “New Heights” episode dropped. Fans were quick to speculate about when Kelce popped the question — and they didn’t have to wait long before getting a timeline from Kelce’s dad Ed, who told News 5 Cleveland that the couple got engaged roughly two weeks ago.

Ed said he was at the Philadelphia Eagles’ public practice on Aug. 10 when he got a Facetime from the newly engaged couple. He told “The Jimmy & Nath Show” that Travis had planned to propose next weekend.

“He was going to make a big production out of it,” Ed shared, explaining that Travis wanted it to be “uber special.”

“And I told him the same thing [Swift’s dad] Scott told him: Asking her is what’s going to make it special, not where you do it. You could do it on the side of the road.”

Ed said Swift’s dad told him to “just get it done.”

Where did Kelce pop the question?

Kelce proposed on the grounds of his $6 million Missouri home, which he purchased back in 2023. The engagement photos show a dramatic display of flowers adorning an arch and surrounding the couple.

Florist Ashley Greer told People Magazine that the “enchanted garden” scene, which featured thousands of flowers, likely cost nearly $40,000. Also featured — ivy and willow, a likely nod to two songs off Swift’s ninth studio album, “evermore.”

What do we know about the ring?

Kelce skipped the paper rings and went for a custom old mine brilliant cut in a yellow gold bezel setting. Swift’s representative said New York based goldsmith Kindred Lubeck, who specializes in hand engraving, designed the ring.

Old mine brilliant cuts are often boxy shaped with rounded corners and soft curved edges. They usually have 58 large facets and the style dates to the 18th century. The bulky nature of the cut was intended to sparkle by candlelight.

Where it all began

As Swifties and Chief fans alike already know, their relationship began after Kelce’s failed attempt to meet Swift at Arrowhead Stadium. He talked about the show in a July 2023 episode of his “New Heights” podcast, telling his brother Jason Kelce that he was disappointed that he wasn’t able to give her a friendship bracelet he had made with his number on it.

After the episode aired, Swift heard from people close to Kelce, including Chiefs coach Andy Reid, encouraging her to reach out to him. And the rest is history.

On Swift’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast, which aired Aug. 13 and smashed Guinness World records, she said the friendship bracelet gesture made her feel like she was in a 1980s John Hughes movie.

“[It’s like] he was just standing outside of my window with a boombox just being like, ‘I want to date you! Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet! Do you want to date me?'” she said. “I was like, ‘If this guy isn’t crazy … this is sort of what I’ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.'”

“This podcast has done a lot for me,” she said. “This podcast got me a boyfriend.”

‘Global Trade Must Be Free Of Pressure’: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s Bold Call For Ethical Commerce

The global trade must take place and continue “voluntarily” and it should be devoid of any pressure tactics or tricks, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat stated on Wednesday, stressing a balanced approach to global commerce. Speaking on the second day of the three-day lecture series, “100 Years of the Sangh Journey—New Horizons” in New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan, he elaborated on the principles of self-reliance and Swadeshi.

“International trade should happen only voluntarily, not under pressure,” said Bhagwat, adding that “self-reliance” is the key to the way forward for India.

Aatmnirbharata (self-reliance) or Swadeshi is important. Being self-reliant does not mean stopping imports. The world functions because it is interdependent. So, export-import will continue. However, there should be no pressure in it. Swadeshi means not importing goods that we already have or can easily manufacture. We should always support local businesses. Bringing outside goods hurts local vendors,” Bhagwat explained.

The RSS chief’s remarks echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for balancing economic self-interest with the promotion of local enterprise, highlighting the need for trade policies free from coercion.

Beyond economics, Bhagwat also addressed the current global situation, noting that discussions on peace, environmental sustainability, and economic inequality are ongoing, yet concrete solutions look distant. “For this, we must think and deliberate authentically, bring sacrifice into life, and develop balanced intellect and dharmic vision,” he said, emphasising that thoughtful action and moral grounding are essential to meaningful global change.

Mentioning India’s international conduct, Bhagwat lauded the nation’s restraint in the face of adversities. “We have always exercised restraint even in our losses. Those who caused us harm were helped in their crisis. Enmity arises from individual and national ego, but beyond ego is our Bharat or Hindustan.”

He urged Indian society to serve as a model for the world, demonstrating that ethical behaviour and measured response can build credibility and trust.

Bhagwat further underlined that the Sangh’s reputation is rooted in consistent service and societal commitment. “What the Sangh says, society listens to,” he stated, reiterating that the RSS’s credibility has been earned over decades through steadfast dedication to social welfare.

By linking self-reliance with ethical engagement, Bhagwat highlighted a vision where India not only strengthens its domestic economy but also sets a global example. The stress is on voluntary participation in trade, local empowerment, and moral leadership, creating a framework where economic growth and societal responsibility go hand in hand.

Peter Andre voices fears over kids’ safety in AI driven social media age

Peter Andre has expressed concern for his children’s wellbeing in the digital era.

The Mysterious Girl singer, 53-who shares two children, Princess and Junior, with ex-wife Katie Price, 47, sat down for a one-o-one chat with the ITV This Morning hosts Ryan Clark, 36, and Josie Gibson, 40.

During the interview, the conversation turned to his eldest kids, who had appeared on the sofa earlier this month.

When Josie asked about social media and whether it worried him, Peter replied: ‘It’s interesting but when we started we did not know the pitfalls of it then.

‘Now, I don’t even think social on its own is the problem, I think with AI involved in it, it’s a whole different level. It’s scary now’.

Princess and Junior both are both doing well in their careers and enjoy an incredible following on Instagram account.

Peter also admitted that he has less lost control over them now that they are adults, but he believes in giving them the freedom to take a progressive approach to life.

He added: ‘They are good kids and they have their own mind and I love that. I let them have their freedom.’

Emma Heming makes heartbreaking confession amid Bruce Willis dementia

Emma Heming makes heartbreaking confession amid Bruce Willis dementia

Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis has recently revealed her painful condition after the actor was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia back in 2023.

The actor’s wife reflected on her journey while speaking with Diane Sawyer during the ABC special, Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey, which aired on August 26.

The author revealed that she fell into depression after learning about his diagnosis.

“I was losing it and felt “so alone and so isolated”.

Elaborating on how she coped with her mental health at this time, Emma pointed out that she received professional help and hired caregivers to help the Die Hard actor in treating her depression.

“We are very fortunate enough that we can afford care and many families are not able to. Formal caregiving is astronomical, yet they deserve every penny,” noted the 47-year-old.

Emma, who tied the knot with Bruce in 2009, opened up that she’s now focused on bringing awareness to the disease.

“That is this whole motivation for me to raise awareness about this disease, because we want families, we want people to be able to be diagnosed earlier, when they can participate in these trials,” she added.

When asked about her conversation with Bruce nowadays, the cookbook author stated, “Just how he’s doing, [if] he’s OK, he feels OK. If there’s anything that we could do to support him better. I would really love to know that.”

American Eagle shares rise on partnership with Travis Kelce, fresh off his engagement to Taylor Swift

Shares of American Eagle rose Wednesday morning after the apparel company announced a collaboration with football star Travis Kelce, just a day after he and singer Taylor Swift said they were engaged.

The stock was up roughly 5% in early trading.

Kelce’s sportswear brand, Tru Kolors, is launching a limited-edition collaboration with American Eagle, pairing the jeans brand with Kelce’s picks, including vintage-inspired T-shirts and “reimagined” varsity jackets. The collaboration was more than a year in the making, Kelce said, but the announcement came just a day after his proposal caused a global internet stir among fans.

“It was an awesome opportunity to team up with an established brand where both sides were excited to truly collaborate on every decision in the design and creative process that brought the ‘AE x TK’ collection to life,” Kelce, the creative director of the collection, said in a statement.

The new pieces are launching in two drops on Wednesday and on Sept. 24.

American Eagle wasn’t the only stock to get a bump from the NFL star’s engagement announcement this week. Shares of Signet Jewelers popped briefly following the proposal as fans focused on Swift’s “cushion cut” engagement ring.

Other companies wasted no time in using the proposal to promote their products, such as Domino’s, Grubhub and Solidcore, among others.

Kelce’s American Eagle collaboration comes after the jeans brand announced a collaboration with actress Sydney Sweeney in July. That team-up captivated the internet over what some critics deemed a tone-deaf campaign for its wordplay of good “jeans” and “genes.”

Shares of the company soared in a meme-stock fashion after the Sweeney promos were unveiled, aided by President Donald Trump calling the campaign the “hottest ad out there.”

The stock is up about 20% since mid-July.

‘Love Story’ singer says ‘she is getting married soon’

Taylor Swift has officially announced her engagement with partner Travis Kelce.

The Blank Space hitmaker started dating the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League in 2023.

The duo has been setting couple goals with their rare romantic outings ever since.

Yesterday on August 26, America’s best-selling music artist dropped romantic and dreamy photos of her intimate engagement with Kelce.

The two posed for the pictures amongst a floral setup. She captioned the post, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
