Weight Loss: Go Beyond Treadmill – Innovative Fitness Techniques To Stay Fit

0

Using a treadmill can be an excellent way of burning calories and losing weight. An easy piece of exercise equipment to use, running or walking on a treadmill is a cardio exercise that can help lose weight faster than other in-home equipment like an exercise bike. But despite the efficacy of treadmills, they may not be suitable for some people, while for others, only treadmill exercises may not lead to weight loss.

Kushal Pal Singh, Fitness and Performance Expert, Anytime Fitness, shares, “When it comes to fitness, the treadmill has been a steadfast ally for many, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Its repetitive nature may not suit everyone, especially those seeking diverse and engaging workouts. Especially because, while the treadmill only focuses on cardio, we equally require strength training to build a healthy body.”

Who Should NOT Use A Treadmill

The treadmill might not be ideal for individuals who crave variety in their workouts, says Singh. “Some find the continuous motion monotonous or struggle with joint issues aggravated by the repetitive impact. Moreover, people who have had knee injuries in the past, suffer from weaker joints, obesity, diabetes and those with cardiovascular ailments shouldn’t use treadmills on a regular basis.”

Why Should You Go Beyond Treadmill

Beyond the treadmill lies a world of exercise diversity waiting to be explored, says Singh. “Variety isn’t just the spice of life; it’s the catalyst for a well-rounded fitness regimen. Diversifying workouts not only prevents boredom but also targets different muscle groups and challenges the body in unique ways,” says Singh.

Fitness And Weight Loss: Different Types Of Exercises And Benefits

Kushal Pal Singh lists the following exercises and their benefits:

HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training): Incorporating short bursts of intense activity followed by brief recovery periods, HIIT offers time-efficient workouts with metabolism-boosting benefits.

Yoga and Pilates: Focusing on flexibility, core strength, and mind-body connection, these practices enhance balance, posture, and overall wellness.

Strength Training: Utilising resistance and weights, strength training builds muscle mass, boosts metabolism, and fortifies bones.

Group Fitness Classes: From dance-inspired workouts to martial arts-based sessions, group classes foster community, motivation, and fun while burning calories.

“Each exercise form has its unique advantages, catering to different fitness goals, whether it’s weight loss, muscle toning, or enhancing flexibility and endurance,” says Singh.

More Fitness Tips

Outdoor Activities: Embrace nature with activities like hiking, cycling, or outdoor boot camps for a refreshing change of scenery and a dose of Vitamin D, says Singh.

Technology-Driven Workouts: The trainer adds that virtual reality workouts or apps that gamify fitness routines provide an innovative and engaging twist to exercising.

Mindful Movement Practices: One should also embrace Tai Chi or meditation, which emphasises slow, deliberate movements promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and improved balance.

“Innovation in fitness is boundless. Experimenting with various exercises not only keeps workouts exciting but also ensures holistic fitness development, preventing plateaus and burnout. In conclusion, while the treadmill offers convenience, stepping beyond its confines opens a gateway to a world of diverse fitness options. By exploring varied exercises and embracing innovation, individuals can sculpt not just their bodies but also their overall well-being,” says Singh.

LeBron: Would skip Lakers game for son’s debut

0

OKLAHOMA CITY — LeBron James is so excited to see eldest son Bronny make his college basketball debut that the Los Angeles Lakers will have to take a backseat to the USC Trojans if it comes to that.

“Whenever he’s cleared and ready to have his first game, I already told my teammates that if they play on the same day we’re playing, I’m going to have to catch them the next game,” James said after the Lakers’ 133-110 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night. “Family over everything … But definitely got to see Bronny’s first game whenever he’s cleared and ready to go.”

The Lakers finished their road trip 2-2 with the loss, blowing an early 14-point lead in the process, but it was hard to dim James’ spirit on the day it was announced that Bronny was cleared by doctors for a full return to basketball with USC.

The 19-year-old freshman, who suffered cardiac arrest during a team workout in July and underwent successful surgery to repair what the James family referred to as a likely congenital heart defect, has yet to appear in a game for the 5-2 Trojans.

Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell jokingly groaned in dismay when James revealed the possibility of missing a Lakers game to see his son debut. However, Davis told reporters afterward that the two team captains discussed the plan on a recent team flight and that the 38-year-old has the full support of the locker room.

Bronny will have a final evaluation by the USC staff this week, begin practicing next week and return to games soon after, a James family spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

There are a handful of upcoming dates in the next two months when the teams’ schedules overlap:

Dec. 28 — Lakers vs. Charlotte Hornets; USC at Oregon

Dec. 30 — Lakers at Minnesota Timberwolves; USC at Oregon State

Jan. 3 — Lakers vs. Miami Heat; USC vs. California

Jan. 13 — Lakers at Utah Jazz; USC at Colorado

Jan. 17 — Lakers vs. Dallas Mavericks; USC at Arizona

Jan. 27 — Lakers at Golden State Warriors; USC vs. UCLA

“Just a proud moment,” James said of his son continuing to advance toward a return. “Big-time excitement from our family for Bronny. And for USC, as well. It’s something that he’s been working towards for the last 12 weeks. And for him to get the clearance to do what he loves to do and go back to being with his teammates and put on a uniform and things of that nature, it’s pretty gratifying for sure.”

Things seem less optimistic for James’ Lakers team, which lost the two games on the road trip in Philadelphia and Oklahoma City by a combined 67 points. The Lakers dropped to 11-9 overall approaching the quarter mark of the 82-game regular-season schedule.

However, with injuries continuing to challenge the roster — five planned rotation pieces in Jarred Vanderbilt (left heel), Gabe Vincent (left knee), Cam Reddish (right groin), Jaxson Hayes (left elbow) and Rui Hachimura (nasal fracture) were unavailable against the Thunder — the team needs to get whole before it can figure out how the pieces fit or not.

“It’s impossible to make an assessment,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said of the season thus far.

But Bronny’s update was a reminder of the bigger picture for a team that has big goals of its own this season.

“It’s amazing, man,” Ham said. “I’m so happy for him and their family.”

Nifty50 hits record high, BSE Sensex surges on GDP growth data, exit polls – Times of India

0

Nifty50, the benchmark index of India’s National Stock Exchange, reached a fresh record high on Friday, reaching 20,258.45 in early trade. The surge in the index can be attributed to the faster-than-expected India GDP growth in the September quarter. The Indian economy expanded by 7.6%, surpassing the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 6.5%. This growth was mainly driven by the manufacturing sector.
The positive economic growth has also boosted optimism regarding the global interest rate outlook, according to an ET report. Additionally, the results of the exit polls indicate a high possibility of political stability, further contributing to the positive sentiment in the market.
The BSE Sensex, another key index, rallied over 400 points or 0.67% to reach 67,420. Nifty50 rose by 0.6% or over 120 points in the morning session, surpassing the 20,250 mark.
In terms of individual stocks, all Sensex stocks, except for Wipro, Titan, HCL Tech, and Infosys, opened in the green. On the sectoral front, Nifty Realty surged over 2%, while Nifty PSU Bank rose 0.75%. Other sectors such as Nifty Auto, Financial, FMCG, Media, Metal, and Pharma also saw an increase in early trade.
In the broader market, Nifty Midcap100 gained 0.66%, while Smallcap100 surged 0.7%. One notable small-cap firm, ITD Cementation, saw a rise of 13% after securing a contract for a hydel power project in Andhra Pradesh.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, believes that the positive data and news will sustain the market momentum. He highlighted the GDP growth rate of 7.6% in the September quarter and the exit poll results indicating political stability as key factors driving the market.

On the global front, Asian markets saw mixed performance, with MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan falling 0.5%. Major Wall Street indexes also experienced a mixed performance, with the Dow surging almost 1.5% and the Nasdaq slipping after fresh inflation data was published.
In terms of foreign investment, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) bought Indian shares worth Rs 8,147.8 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors sold shares worth Rs 780.3 crore. FPIs also ended a two-month selling streak in November, adding stocks worth Rs 9,001 crore.
Oil prices continued to decline, heading for a sixth straight week of losses. The voluntary oil output cuts agreed by OPEC+ producers fell short of market expectations, causing Brent crude futures for February to fall by 39 cents to $80.47 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures also fell by 23 cents to $75.73.
Lastly, the Indian rupee rose 9 paise against the US dollar in early trade. The dollar index, which tracks the movement of the greenback against major world currencies, declined to 103.4 level.

Israel-Gaza war live updates: Israeli military says pause in fighting is over

0

The Israel Defense Forces said that the pause in fighting between it and Hamas had ended, a few minutes after 7 a.m. Friday local time, when the pause was due to end. Israel’s military said Hamas had “violated the operational pause and, in addition, fired toward Israeli territory.” The Washington Post could not immediately verify that claim. Although neither side had ruled out extending the pause, there had been no announcement of an extension before that deadline. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters Thursday, while on a visit to Tel Aviv, that Israel must minimize civilian deaths in Gaza once fighting resumes. “We made clear the imperative … that there be a clear plan in place that puts a premium on protecting civilians,” Blinken said. “And the Israeli government agreed with that approach.” On Thursday, eight more hostages and 30 Palestinian prisoners were freed in the latest captive exchange.

Bilawal takes dig at Nawaz’s fourth premiership attempt | The Express Tribune

QUETTA:

PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday said, referring to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, that he has been told that the three-time prime minister will come into power again for the fourth time “to rescue the country”.

Addressing the Balochistan High Court Bar Association in Quetta, Bilawal said he is aware of how elections are held in Pakistan and said that if the people are awakened, no power will be able to stop them from exercising their right to choose.

He maintained that general elections will be held on February 8 in the country.

Taking aim at PTI Chairman Imran Khan, said the 70-year-old “leader of the youth” who ignored the missing persons is also being considered as the ‘last option’.

Asking the people to ‘surprise’ the powers that be on election day, he urged the people to come out and vote for change.

Criticising both Imran and Nawaz, the PPP chairman urged the people not to hand over the fate of the country to the two leaders whose politics of hatred, division and ignoring major issues have lessened the ‘value of the peoples’ blood’.

Earlier, PPP Central Information Secretary Shazia Marri said that her party has always talked about missing persons and that party Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari had initiated the ‘Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan Package’, operationalised Gwadar Port, established universities, advocated a 50 per cent share for Balochistan in the Saindak project and empowered provinces with the 18th Amendment.

‘Gabby Petito Act’ filed in Florida Senate to protect domestic violence victims

0

After the heartbreaking story of Gabby Petito’s death gripped the nation in 2021, two Florida state legislators filed a bill to strengthen domestic violence prevention efforts in the Sunshine State.

Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book and Rep. Robin Bartleman filed the “Gabby Petito Act” after the initiative was brought forward by Gabby’s father, Joseph Petito.

The bill proposes a new statewide mandate that would require all law enforcement officers to complete a lethality assessment when investigating domestic violence incidents.

“We know in different places throughout the country where lethality assessments are used. Even here in our great state, where they’re used in pockets, we know that it reduces the incidence of a lethal situation,” Book said to FOX 13. “In Maryland, where we’ve kind of seen a lot of this work being done, it reduces the lethality by 35 to 45 percent.”

The Spring of Tampa Bay, a non-profit organization that assists domestic violence survivors, worked with the legislators as well at Petito’s dad.

The president and CEO of The Spring of Tampa Bay, Mindy Murphy, said that if passed, the legislation could establish a history of abuse beyond the initial call.

“Law enforcement ask the survivor to separate from the abuser, a series of questions that are designed to pinpoint the risk that that that victim might eventually be murdered by their partner,” Murphy said to FOX 13.

Murphy said Moab, Utah, police missed those clues when they talked with Gabby in body camera video from August 2021 before she was killed.

“Within the first three minutes, Gabby talks about how Brian put, and she actually puts her hands up like this, how he put his hands around her face,” Murphy said. “That would have been a perfect opportunity for law enforcement to stop and say, ‘Hey, has he ever done that before?’”

Joseph said that domestic violence is a people issue, not a political issue, and he hopes to see something similar on the national level.

NAB files reference in £190 million settlement case | The Express Tribune

0

ISLAMABAD:

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed a reference in the £190 million settlement case on Friday, officially nominating former prime minister Imran Khan as accused in the case.

A total of eight people have been nominated in the case. Others beside Imran include his wife, Bushra Bibi, her friend Farhat Shahzadi aka Farah Gogi, PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari, former accountability czar Shahzad Akbar and Barrister Zia-ul-Mustafa Naseem.

The reference comes as the anti-graft buster concludes its investigation with the court sending the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief on judicial remand in the case.

Hearing the case earlier this week, on November 27, 2023, accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir rejected NAB’s request for extending Imran’s physical remand in the case.

The court instead, sent the PTI chairman on a 14-day judicial remand.

At the previous hearing, on November 24, 2023, the judge had instructed NAB to conclude its investigation and present a report.

The case

The £190 million (approximately Rs60 billion) settlement case pertains to the money of a property tycoon being laundered and caught by the UK authorities during Imran’s government in 2019. The UK government had informed the Pakistani authorities regarding the money being caught.

The May 9 arrest of the ex-prime minister came in this case for the first time.

Addressing a press conference regarding Imran’s arrest in the case at the time, then interior minister Rana Sanaullah said that as per law, the amount belonged to the Pakistani nation and should have been deposited in the national exchequer. “Instead [the then adviser to the prime minister] Shahzad Akbar acting as a front-man, formed the Al-Qadir Trust under a deal executed by him,” he claimed.

The minister said some 458-kanal of land in Sohawa and another 240-kanal in Bani Gala were registered in the name of Al-Qadir Trust.

Sanaullah said some seven to eight months ago, he had provided details of the two properties and had challenged the PTI chief to clarify if Al-Qadir Trust was not established by Imran himself to hide his corruption.

He further said the PTI chief and his wife Bushra Bibi were the only two trustees of the trust.

He said the 240-kanal of land in Bani Gala, worth around Rs5-7 billion, was registered in the name of Farah Gogi, a close friend of Imran Khan’s wife, while Akbar had also taken Rs2 billion for his services.

He said instead of depositing Rs60 billion into the national treasury, the amount landed in the bank account of the Supreme Court, where the accused property tycoon was under trial. The amount was, in fact, returned to the accused in a complex manner to hoodwink the masses, he added.
