Bilawal takes dig at Nawaz’s fourth premiership attempt | The Express Tribune

0

QUETTA:

PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday said, referring to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, that he has been told that the three-time prime minister will come into power again for the fourth time “to rescue the country”.

Addressing the Balochistan High Court Bar Association in Quetta, Bilawal said he is aware of how elections are held in Pakistan and said that if the people are awakened, no power will be able to stop them from exercising their right to choose.

He maintained that general elections will be held on February 8 in the country.

Taking aim at PTI Chairman Imran Khan, said the 70-year-old “leader of the youth” who ignored the missing persons is also being considered as the ‘last option’.

Asking the people to ‘surprise’ the powers that be on election day, he urged the people to come out and vote for change.

Criticising both Imran and Nawaz, the PPP chairman urged the people not to hand over the fate of the country to the two leaders whose politics of hatred, division and ignoring major issues have lessened the ‘value of the peoples’ blood’.

Earlier, PPP Central Information Secretary Shazia Marri said that her party has always talked about missing persons and that party Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari had initiated the ‘Aghaz-e-Huqooq-e-Balochistan Package’, operationalised Gwadar Port, established universities, advocated a 50 per cent share for Balochistan in the Saindak project and empowered provinces with the 18th Amendment.

‘Gabby Petito Act’ filed in Florida Senate to protect domestic violence victims

0

After the heartbreaking story of Gabby Petito’s death gripped the nation in 2021, two Florida state legislators filed a bill to strengthen domestic violence prevention efforts in the Sunshine State.

Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book and Rep. Robin Bartleman filed the “Gabby Petito Act” after the initiative was brought forward by Gabby’s father, Joseph Petito.

The bill proposes a new statewide mandate that would require all law enforcement officers to complete a lethality assessment when investigating domestic violence incidents.

“We know in different places throughout the country where lethality assessments are used. Even here in our great state, where they’re used in pockets, we know that it reduces the incidence of a lethal situation,” Book said to FOX 13. “In Maryland, where we’ve kind of seen a lot of this work being done, it reduces the lethality by 35 to 45 percent.”

The Spring of Tampa Bay, a non-profit organization that assists domestic violence survivors, worked with the legislators as well at Petito’s dad.

The president and CEO of The Spring of Tampa Bay, Mindy Murphy, said that if passed, the legislation could establish a history of abuse beyond the initial call.

“Law enforcement ask the survivor to separate from the abuser, a series of questions that are designed to pinpoint the risk that that that victim might eventually be murdered by their partner,” Murphy said to FOX 13.

Murphy said Moab, Utah, police missed those clues when they talked with Gabby in body camera video from August 2021 before she was killed.

“Within the first three minutes, Gabby talks about how Brian put, and she actually puts her hands up like this, how he put his hands around her face,” Murphy said. “That would have been a perfect opportunity for law enforcement to stop and say, ‘Hey, has he ever done that before?’”

Joseph said that domestic violence is a people issue, not a political issue, and he hopes to see something similar on the national level.

NAB files reference in £190 million settlement case | The Express Tribune

0

ISLAMABAD:

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed a reference in the £190 million settlement case on Friday, officially nominating former prime minister Imran Khan as accused in the case.

A total of eight people have been nominated in the case. Others beside Imran include his wife, Bushra Bibi, her friend Farhat Shahzadi aka Farah Gogi, PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari, former accountability czar Shahzad Akbar and Barrister Zia-ul-Mustafa Naseem.

The reference comes as the anti-graft buster concludes its investigation with the court sending the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief on judicial remand in the case.

Hearing the case earlier this week, on November 27, 2023, accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir rejected NAB’s request for extending Imran’s physical remand in the case.

The court instead, sent the PTI chairman on a 14-day judicial remand.

At the previous hearing, on November 24, 2023, the judge had instructed NAB to conclude its investigation and present a report.

The case

The £190 million (approximately Rs60 billion) settlement case pertains to the money of a property tycoon being laundered and caught by the UK authorities during Imran’s government in 2019. The UK government had informed the Pakistani authorities regarding the money being caught.

The May 9 arrest of the ex-prime minister came in this case for the first time.

Addressing a press conference regarding Imran’s arrest in the case at the time, then interior minister Rana Sanaullah said that as per law, the amount belonged to the Pakistani nation and should have been deposited in the national exchequer. “Instead [the then adviser to the prime minister] Shahzad Akbar acting as a front-man, formed the Al-Qadir Trust under a deal executed by him,” he claimed.

The minister said some 458-kanal of land in Sohawa and another 240-kanal in Bani Gala were registered in the name of Al-Qadir Trust.

Sanaullah said some seven to eight months ago, he had provided details of the two properties and had challenged the PTI chief to clarify if Al-Qadir Trust was not established by Imran himself to hide his corruption.

He further said the PTI chief and his wife Bushra Bibi were the only two trustees of the trust.

He said the 240-kanal of land in Bani Gala, worth around Rs5-7 billion, was registered in the name of Farah Gogi, a close friend of Imran Khan’s wife, while Akbar had also taken Rs2 billion for his services.

He said instead of depositing Rs60 billion into the national treasury, the amount landed in the bank account of the Supreme Court, where the accused property tycoon was under trial. The amount was, in fact, returned to the accused in a complex manner to hoodwink the masses, he added.

Nifty Hits All-Time High After Upbeat Growth Data, Sensex Up 300 Points

0

New Delhi:

Nifty hit a fresh record high on Friday, as faster-than-expected economic growth in the September-quarter added to optimism over the global interest rate outlook.

The NSE Nifty 50 index rose as much as 0.52% to 20,238.45, a new record high, while the S&P BSE Sensex was up 0.44% at 67,286.16, as of 9.35 am.

The Indian economy expanded 7.6% in the September-quarter, faster than the 6.8% forecast in a Reuters poll of economists and the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 6.5%, led by manufacturing growth.

“India’s growth outlook remains positive, with various capex initiatives of the government likely to trigger consumption at the bottom of the pyramid,” Pramod Gubbi, founder of Marcellus Investment Management, said.

The expectation that we are at the peak of the interest rate cycle in the US has facilitated the move of flows towards more risky assets like emerging equities, especially India, Gubbi added.

Nifty and Sensex posted their best month in 2023 in November, aided by the return on foreign portfolio investor (FPI) inflows.

FPIs snapped a two-month selling streak in November, adding stocks worth 90 billion rupees ($1.1 billion).

Wall Street equity indexes rose overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average clocking its best month since October 2022, after consumer spending data signalled cooling demand, boosting the rate outlook.

Meanwhile, exit polls for state elections showed a narrow advantage for Bharatiya Janata Party in the key states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, while the Congress is seen to be leading in Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

“A decisive BJP win will reinforce consensus that the party is on the front-foot for 2024 general elections and likely add another leg of rally to markets,” said three analysts led by Madhavi Arora, lead economist at Emkay Global Financial Services.

India’s general elections are due early next year.

Red Lobster called its endless shrimp deal ‘irresistible.’ Then it lost $11M.

0

In hopes of attracting more customers during the summer and fall, Red Lobster in June made one of its most popular specialty dishes a mainstay on the menu: Ultimate Endless Shrimp.

In the past few months, the restaurant saw an uptick in customers, who could pay $20 to eat as many shrimp as they wanted. But the offer, which Red Lobster once called “irresistible,” might have been too popular for the restaurant’s own good.

Thai Union Group, a Thailand-based seafood supplier that owns a substantial stake in Red Lobster, said in a recent financial report that the restaurant suffered a roughly $11 million operating loss during its third quarter, as Restaurant Business first reported. Ludovic Regis Henri Garnier, Thai Union Group’s chief financial officer, said on a call with investors in November that the Ultimate Endless Shrimp deal contributed to the financial loss.

“The proportion of the people selecting this promotion was much higher compared to expectation,” Garnier said Nov. 7, according to a transcript of the call.

Red Lobster did not respond to a request for comment from The Washington Post on Thursday night.

Ultimate Endless Shrimp had been a special dish at Red Lobster for more than 18 years, usually appearing on the menu only on Mondays and for unique occasions. Red Lobster, which has more than 700 locations, made the shrimp a permanent menu item in late June.

Customers start by choosing two shrimp dishes, which are served with the chain’s signature cheddar biscuits, but can add additional shrimp dishes at no extra cost.

“Insider tip: avoid grabbing the extra biscuit to leave room for endless amounts of shrimp,” Red Lobster said in its June announcement.

More customers started dining at the restaurant than earlier in the year, but many ordered only the Ultimate Endless Shrimp, Thiraphong Chansiri, Thai Union Group’s chief executive, said on the call with investors. The deal was so popular that some people on social media competed to eat the most shrimp in one sitting or found strategies to consume as many as shrimp as possible.

Red Lobster’s third fiscal quarter ran between July and the end of September.

“Bottom line, in terms of financial performance, it did not deliver what we were expecting,” Garnier said on the call.

Garnier said that Red Lobster has recently increased the price for Ultimate Endless Shrimp to $25 — a change that has improved the restaurant’s operating costs.

Still, Red Lobster is expected to lose nearly $20 million this year, according to Thai Union Group’s recent financial report.

This isn’t the first time Red Lobster has suffered financially from an “endless” dish promotion. In 2003, the restaurant lost millions of dollars after underestimating how many crabs people typically eat in one sitting.

Other restaurants have faced financial issues from similar promotions, including Olive Garden, which didn’t offer its never-ending pasta promotion in 2020 and 2021. Applebee’s failed to meet financial expectations in 2004 after serving all-you-can-eat riblets.

Despite Red Lobster’s recent financial losses, the restaurant isn’t planning to abandon its promotion of unlimited shrimp, one of its signature dishes.

“We want to keep it in the menu,” Garnier said. “But of course, we need to be much more careful regarding what is the entry point and what is the price point we are offering for this promotion.”

Jaclyn Peiser contributed to this report.

World AIDS Day 2023: Myths vs Facts – Doctor Busts Misconceptions About Infection

0

World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1 and the day aims to raise awareness about AIDS  (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) – a condition caused by HIV infection which has killed lakhs of people globally over the years. AIDS is the late stage of HIV that occurs when the body’s immune system is badly damaged because of the virus. Therefore timely diagnosis and treatment of HIV can save lives. When it comes to AIDS and HIV, several myths abound. On World AIDS Day 2023, Dr Honey Savla, Internist at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, busts some important myths about HIV-AIDS.

World AIDS Day 2023: Popular Myths Busted

“HIV-AIDS continues to be a global health challenge, affecting millions of lives and prompting ongoing efforts to educate and raise awareness. Despite the progress made in understanding and managing the virus, persistent myths and misconceptions contribute to stigma and hinder effective prevention and treatment efforts,” shares Dr Honey Savla. Dr Savla busts the following misconceptions about the infection:

Myth 1: HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through casual contact

Fact: HIV is primarily transmitted through specific bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. It is not spread through casual contact like hugging, shaking hands, or sharing utensils. Understanding the modes of transmission is crucial to combating the stigma associated with HIV-positive individuals.

Myth 2: You can contract HIV from mosquito bites

Fact: HIV cannot be transmitted through mosquito bites. The virus is fragile and cannot survive in insects. The only known modes of transmission are through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing needles, and mother-to-child transmission during childbirth or breastfeeding.

Myth 3: HIV/AIDS only affects specific groups of people

Fact: HIV/AIDS can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status. While certain populations may be at higher risk due to specific behaviours, the virus does not discriminate. It is essential to promote inclusivity in awareness campaigns and eliminate stereotypes associated with HIV/AIDS.

Myth 4: HIV-positive individuals cannot lead healthy lives

Fact: With advancements in medical treatment, people living with HIV can lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) helps control the virus, allowing individuals to maintain a normal life expectancy and reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others. Early diagnosis and proper medical care are crucial for managing the virus effectively.

Myth 5: You can tell if someone has HIV/AIDS by their appearance

Fact: HIV/AIDS does not have a specific “look.” People living with the virus may appear healthy, and symptoms can vary widely. Relying on appearance to determine someone’s HIV status perpetuates stigma and discrimination. Regular testing, open communication, and education are essential for promoting understanding.

Myth 6: HIV is a death sentence

Fact: Contrary to the myth that an HIV diagnosis is a death sentence, advancements in medical science have transformed the prognosis for individuals living with the virus. Proper medical care, early diagnosis, and access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) can effectively manage the virus, allowing individuals to lead healthy lives. With treatment, people living with HIV can have a normal life expectancy and reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others.

“Dispelling myths surrounding HIV/AIDS is vital for fostering accurate knowledge and creating a supportive environment for those affected. Education plays an important role in reducing stigma, encouraging regular testing, and promoting safe behaviours. By understanding the facts, we can work towards a world where everyone has access to information and resources needed to prevent, manage, and ultimately eradicate HIV/AIDS,” says Dr Savla.

Difference Between HIV And AIDS

HIV (Human immunodeficiency viruses) may cause an infection while AIDS is a condition. AIDS is acquired only after the contraction of HIV, but not all HIV cases develop into AIDS. In AIDS, your immune system is severely weakened. You can’t develop AIDS without contracting HIV. But as experts point out, medical science’s progress has ensured that people infected with HIV, with proper and timely diagnosis and treatment, can lead full lives.
