Depression and anxiety rates higher among college students than their peers, new study suggests

0

College students may be at a greater risk of experiencing depression and anxiety compared to young people who are not in higher education, according to a new study published in The Lancet Public Health.

Researchers from University College London analyzed data from two studies.

The first study looked at 4,832 young people who were 18 and 19 years old between 2007 and 2009.

The second analyzed 6,128 young people who were 18 and 19 years old between 2016 and 2018.

DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY MAY IMPACT YOUNG ADULTS TWICE AS MUCH AS TEENS, HARVARD SURVEY FINDS

Just over half of the participants were attending college.

Based on multiple surveys the young people completed about their mental health, there was a small, elevated risk for depression and anxiety among the students compared to the non-students. There was an approximate 6% difference in risk between the two groups.

By age 25, after the students had graduated, there was no longer a gap in depression rates, the study found.

“In recent years in the U.K., we have seen an increase in mental health problems among young people, so there has been an increased focus on how to support students,” said lead author Dr. Gemma Lewis from UCL Psychiatry in a press release from the university.

“The first couple of years of higher education are a crucial time for development.”

“The first couple of years of higher education are a crucial time for development,” she added.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER THIS FALL AND WINTER: WISE WAYS TO WARD OFF THE BLUES, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS

“So if we could improve the mental health of young people during this time, it could have long-term benefits for their health and well-being, as well as for their educational achievement and longer-term success.”

Dr. Tayla McCloud, the first author of the study from UCL Psychiatry, said the researchers can’t be certain why students might be more at risk of depression and anxiety than their peers, but suggested some theories.

Based on multiple surveys the young people completed about their mental health, there was a small, elevated risk for depression and anxiety among the students compared to the non-students. (iStock)

“This increased risk among students has not been found in studies in the past, so if the association has only recently emerged, it may be related to increased financial pressures and worries about achieving high results in the wider economic and social context,” she said in the release.

The findings were surprising, McCloud noted.

OVER HALF THE PEOPLE WHO GET COVID HAVE LINGERING SYMPTOMS AFTER 3 YEARS, NEW STUDY FINDS

“We would have expected higher education students to have better mental health than their non-student peers, as they tend to be from more privileged backgrounds on average, so these results are particularly concerning,” she said.

“More research is needed to clarify the mental health risks facing students.”

Warning signs to know

Ljubica Ciric, PsyD, vice president of child and family mental health at the Community Partners of South Florida, was not involved in the study but offered her input on the findings.

“During this particular age, friendships are of a high importance for most children,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Being removed from major support systems — such as high school, the city you lived in and especially parents — increases feelings of loneliness and fear, which are directly correlated with symptoms of anxiety,” Ciric went on.

There is also the added academic and economic pressure, along with the uncertainty of finding a job once school is completed, she said.

There is also a differentiation between diagnosis and symptoms of depression and anxiety, Ciric pointed out.

“This study assessed for only symptoms and a diagnosis was not present.”

“Therefore, it could possibly be more appropriate to call these adjustment difficulties, similar to any other individual struggling emotionally with adjusting to new situations in their lives.”

Warning signs include difficulty completing tasks, trouble concentrating or remembering, lack of energy, increased irritability or feeling overwhelmed all the time. (iStock)

When assessing a young person’s mental health, Ciric advised being mindful of any extreme changes in behavior — “changes in sleep patterns, interest in food, social interests, and levels and frequency of crying or aggression.”

Feelings of increased fear, thoughts that are persistent and create additional feelings of fear, and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness are also red flags.

“Being removed from major support systems … increases feelings of loneliness and fear, which are directly correlated with symptoms of anxiety.”

Additional warning signs include difficulty completing tasks, trouble concentrating or remembering, lack of energy, increased irritability or feeling overwhelmed all the time, added Dr. Beth Oller, a Kansas-based psychologist who regularly helps patients identify and manage mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

Oller was also not involved in the study.

Limitations of the study

This study was in England, Oller pointed out — “so while some associations can be made, it isn’t exactly apples to apples.”

She told Fox News Digital, “There are differences in the higher education systems country to country.”

Boy on bench

College students face academic and economic pressure, along with the uncertainty of finding a job once school is completed, an expert noted.  (iStock)

“The studies also began in 2004 and 2013, so there have been a lot of world events — COVID especially — that may change results, particularly baseline anxiety and depression that may be higher in students who have lived through a pandemic.”

The study was also small, as were the differences between the two groups, Oller pointed out.

“I am not sure that much can be drawn from the study aside from what I would counsel any of my patients: to monitor closely for any signs of depression or anxiety and talk to your family physician if you feel like it is a problem for you,” she said.

“We also have to ask whether people who seek higher education are truly at a higher risk, or possibly just more likely to report or seek treatment as it may be more available.”

Tips to alleviate student depression

Building resilience is important at this age, Ciric said.

Having a mentor on campus to help students feel safe and welcomed could help alleviate depressive symptoms, she advised.

Other ideas include preparing students emotionally — not just academically — for what to expect.

Increasing financial support and creating employment opportunities on campus can also help ease anxiety, Ciric suggested.

Students can also join available activities and groups to increase their connections and relationships with peers.

As Oller noted, most campuses have programs aimed at student wellness that can help.

“I would recommend that any students experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression not only reach out to their family physician, but also see what resources are available at their own college or university,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Encouraging discussion and continuing public health education regarding mental health, reducing stigma and normalizing treatment can all help remove barriers to people getting the help that they need.”

Arsenal stars unveil wild new kit designed by club legend Ian Wright

0

As one of the club’s most charismatic and popular former players (and, more importantly, one of the Premier League‘s greatest-ever goal scorers,) Ian Wright is still an integral presence within the Arsenal family.

The ex-England striker — who scored 128 goals in 221 games for the club — recently celebrated his 60th birthday, but he is still a man who carries himself with a sense of style.

After appearing in various kit unveilings over the years and being regularly involved in their charitable and community pursuits, the Gunners have finally bestowed Wright with his own special limited-edition clothing collection.

The apparel was created with input from the man himself and includes a prematch jersey, a reversible jacket and a shoulder bag. The designs are all black-and-white with gold details on the club crest the three stripes of manufacturer Adidas.

The hand-drawn patchwork patterns are inspired by Wright’s career highlights, his path to stardom and certain aspects of his famously effervescent personality.

For example, the jacket features a large, silhouetted illustration of trademark grin and gold tooth that is unmistakably that of the forward who was once Arsenal’s record goal scorer.

There is also an image (complete with iconic ponytail) of ex-Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman, who played alongside Wright for many years at Arsenal and remains one of his closest friends.

Seaman actually stars in the launch material alongside fellow Arsenal great Kelly Smith and present-day Gunners stars including Gabriel Jesus, Kim Little, Gabriel Magalhaes, Katie McCabe, Eddie Nketiah and David Raya.

“Turning 60 last month made me reflect a lot on what I’ve done so far, my time at Arsenal and the very special people I’ve worked with,” Wright said.

“So to work with Adidas and Arsenal on this range that represents some of my biggest career moments is really special. I hope people feel the love in this collection as much as I do.”

As far as Arsenal fans and Ian Wright are concerned, it’s all love.

Outrage as UN-Palestinian exhibition uses murdered Israeli child’s image as a Palestinian civilian casualty

0

The United Nations office in Geneva removed multiple photos from a pro-Palestinian exhibit after several critics, including the Israeli mission, noted that dead Israeli children had been included.

“Hamas killed Ido,” the Israeli mission to the U.N. in Geneva posted on X, formerly Twitter. “We call on [U.N. Geneva Director-General Tatiana] Valovaya to immediately remove this exhibition, which spreads misinformation and is part of a propaganda campaign.”

The mission first flagged the misinformation on Thursday after identifying the picture of a 5-year-old named Ido Avigal among the pictures of Palestinian children allegedly killed by Israel in Gaza. The mission said that Avigal had died in 2021 when a Hamas rocket barrage hit his house in Sderot, and it called his inclusion in the exhibition “despicable.”

Another user noted that the exhibit also included the picture of a Palestinian teenager who allegedly served in the Mujahideen Brigades, another extremist group based in Gaza and the West Bank. The U.N. did not confirm the veracity of any specific claim but acknowledged that some errant photos were posted “near” the exhibition and disavowed them.

UNITED NATIONS CHIEF BREAKS SILENCE ON HAMAS TERRORISTS’ SEXUAL VIOLENCE, AGREES TO INVESTIGATE OCT 7 ATTACK

“While some people may indeed have seen [the photos] as the exhibition was in a public area, our colleagues were notified very quickly and very quickly put them down,” Alessandra Vellucci, director of the United Nations Information Service, told Fox News Digital.

Velluci acknowledged that multiple “images” were included in the exhibit but insisted they “were not there for long.” She said that no one saw who included the images.

Vellucci explained that the Geneva U.N. office included the exhibit as part of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people – an annual observance dating to 1977 on the day when the General Assembly had 30 years earlier voted to adopt the resolution on the partition of Palestine.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR: WHO SAYS DISEASE COULD BE BIGGER KILLER THAN BOMBS IN GAZA UNLESS IMMEDIATE ACTION IS TAKEN

“The exhibition was organized in accordance with the GA resolution 60/37 of 1 December 2005, which requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the U.N.,” Vellucci said.

“However, before the commemoration started, additional images – including the one you refer to – were found to have been posted near the official exhibition,” Vellucci continued. “They were immediately removed as they were not part of the official, authorized exhibition.”

“The director-general was not informed in advance about these additional images, and as I said, her staff immediately took them off,” she added, promising to reach out to the Israeli mission for any potential information on the issue.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said he had no knowledge about the exhibit or who organized it, but a critic slammed the New York headquarters for continuing to perpetuate its own forms of misinformation with two videos near the public entrance that amount to a form of “blood libel.”

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR: US LOOKS TO INCREASE AID INTO GAZA THROUGH EGYPT, INCLUDES WARNING FOR ISRAEL

“At UN Headquarters in New York the public entrance currently has an exhibition for the same occasion that has a litany of grotesque blood libels,” Anne Bayefsky, director of the Touro Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust, told Fox News Digital.

Palestinian support demonstration

She described how one video claims that “leading Zionist politicians” pursued “the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians” while the other video accused Israel of promoting an “apartheid” state driven by “the capacity of the sword to defeat the sword.”

Bayefsky argued that these videos, in contrast to the exhibit in Geneva, convey the image of Jews who “massacre” hapless Arab civilians while saying “absolutely nothing about 75 years of successive Arab wars launched to annihilate the Jewish state.”

“Where is the outrage of this vile incitement of Jew hatred that is funded and organized by the United Nations itself, together with its Palestinian partners?” Bayefsky said.

The U.N. did provide comment to Fox News Digital regarding the videos by time of publication.

WATCH: Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupt Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree lighting

NYPD prepared in advance for potential security threats citing precedent for terrorist activity and mass gatherings

A group of at least 500 pro-Palestine protesters disrupted the lighting of the Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree on Wednesday night, according to ABC News.

The protesters gathered outside the News Corp building for an hour at 47th Street and Sixth Avenue. They unfurled a flag and attempted to push towards a tree, but were stopped by police and barricades.

The group then reversed course, causing a crush, scuffles, and seven arrests, including six adults and one juvenile.

A 30-year-old Tasfia Islam who belongs to Queens was charged with felony criminal mischief, five others for obstructing governmental administration, and a 15-year-old boy received a juvenile report and was released to a guardian.

Islam was charged with knocking a cell phone out of a person’s hand, while the other five received desk appearance tickets for court.

Thousands attended Midtown’s holiday celebration as the 80-foot-tall Norway spruce was lit for the season.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) prepared in advance for potential security threats, citing a precedent for terrorist activity and holiday-related events or mass gatherings.

According to an NYPD threat assessment obtained by ABC News, “The US continues to face a heightened and dynamic risk environment from a variety of extremists amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and malicious actors may view mass gatherings, iconic locations and high-profile events as targets of opportunity during the holiday season.”

“We allow people to exercise their first amendment, but by no means do we allow anyone to come out here to do hate, crime or assault,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

Rockefeller Centre has implemented street closures, as cars will not be allowed on the streets between 11am and 12am daily.

These restrictions are meant to allow pedestrians to enjoy the holiday season and other festive sites on East 51st and 48th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, which will remain in effect until New Year’s Day.

Pakistan players wary of Usman Khawaja’s Urdu: Hasan Ali

Pakistan pacer reveals Usman Khawaja leaked their strategy to Aussies during last Benaud-Qadir Trophy

Pakistan’s fast bowler Hasan Ali said that the Green Shirts will remain cautious of Australian batter Usman Khawaja during the upcoming Test series and refrain from having discussions in Urdu in front of him.

The pacer revealed that Usman — who was born in Islamabad and is familiar with Urdu — leaked their team’s strategy to the Aussies during the last Benaud-Qadir Trophy.

“Usman bhai is familiar with Urdu,” Hasan told Cricket Australia in an interview ahead of the three-Test series starting December 14. The Pakistan squad has reached Canberra where the team will play a 4-day match against Australia PM XI.

“After he leaked our strategies to the Australia cricket team in Karachi, we’ve become more cautious. We’ll ensure not to discuss plans in Urdu in front of him to keep our strategies confidential. We’ll move a bit farther away from him to strategize for the game.”

Shedding light on the upcoming challenges his team faces during the highly anticipated tour to Australia, Ali said that bouncy tracks make it a formidable Test for the Pakistani team.

“It’s not just Pakistan, all South Asian teams find it challenging to take 20 wickets on Australian tours. The pitches in Australia differ from those in other cricketing nations, and the local players’ familiarity with their conditions often poses problems for visiting squads,” said the pacer.

Expressing his admiration for Australia men’s cricket team Captain Pat Cummins — who led his team to victory in the ICC World Cup 2023 against India — Ali highlighted the Australian captain as the standout bowler in the current squad.

“Pat Cummins stands out as the best bowler. His excellence in all three formats is commendable. Both Shaheen Afridi from Pakistan and Pat Cummins from Australia are skillful bowlers who understand the art of bowling with new and semi-new balls.”

Ali also reacted to the support from Australian cricket fans and shared his experiences from his 2016 visit.

“Australian cricket fans love watching cricket and have been supportive of Pakistan. The recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in Australia saw tremendous support for Pakistan, except for the India game.”

Hasan expressed optimism about fans turning out to watch cricketing greats during the Australia vs Pakistan series, especially on Boxing Day, a traditional holiday. “I believe fans will turn out to watch cricketing greats like Steve Smith, David Warner, Shaheen Afridi, and Babar Azam and support the spirit of good cricket.”

Pakistan squad for Australia Tests

Shan Masood (captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi

Australia tour schedule

Four-day match: PM’s XI vs Pakistan – December 6-9: Manuka Oval, Canberra

1st Test – Australia vs Pakistan – December 14-18: Perth Stadium

2nd Test – Australia vs Pakistan – December 26-30: Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

3rd Test – Australia vs Pakistan – January 3-7: Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG)

Here are the hostages released by Hamas and those remaining in Gaza

0

More than 100 hostages held in the Gaza Strip have been released since they were taken in the cross-border Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Estimates for the total number of hostages seized in the attack that left at least 1,200 people dead in Israel have shifted over the course of the war. As of Thursday, approximately 137 hostages remained in Gaza, according to numbers provided by Israel, but the country has not given the full basis for its estimates.

A deal between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar, paused the fighting from Nov. 24 to Friday, and allowed for the release of women and children in exchange for Palestinian women and teens in Israeli prisons. However, fighting restarted on Friday, with Israeli warplanes resuming strikes in Gaza.

During the pause, 81 Israeli citizens — including those who also hold citizenship from other countries — were released. Under the deal’s framework, every Israeli hostage freed would initiate the release of three Palestinian prisoners. Outside the framework of the exchange deal, 24 foreign nationals — who do not hold Israeli citizenship — were freed. Before the deal, some hostages — including two Americans — were also released or rescued.

The specific number of hostages who have died in captivity, and the ages, gender and nationalities of those thought to remain in Gaza, are unclear. Israel has estimated that the majority of those remaining have Israeli citizenship and are men. It’s unclear how many are members of the Israeli military.

Two Americans — Abigail Edan, 4, and Liat Beinin Atzili, 49 — have been released under the exchange deal. Fewer than 10 U.S. citizens are now held hostage, according to the White House. At the time of Beinin’s release on Wednesday, her husband, Aviv Atzili, 49, was thought to be in Gaza as a hostage of Hamas, according to the White House. But Israeli authorities told Beinin’s father on Thursday that Atzili was killed on Oct. 7, based on a forensic DNA analysis of remains.

While Hamas is thought to hold most of the hostages, some are believed to be held by other militant groups, including Palestinian Islamic Jihad, whose fighters also took part in the Oct. 7 attack. Israel said it discovered the bodies of at least two hostages it claimed were killed in captivity. Hamas says Israeli strikes have killed some hostages. The Washington Post could not independently verify either side’s claim.

Here is a list of the hostages released and what is known about those who remain.

Inside the hard, circuitous route to a hostage release deal

Number of hostages estimated remaining in Gaza: 137

More than 240 people are thought to have been abducted Oct. 7.

Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy said Thursday that 145 hostages are still being held in Gaza, and the subsequent release of eight hostages would bring that number to 137.

The majority of the hostages are men, Levy said. Israel said there are 10 hostages who are more than 75 years old, including husbands of elderly women who have been released.

Fewer than 10 Americans remain in captivity in Gaza, according to John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

Israeli American mother released as husband remains in Hamas captivity

Names of hostages who were released or freed before the deal

Before the pause in fighting, Hamas released four hostages in two batches in October. Americans Judith Raanan, 59, and her daughter Natalie, 17, were released Oct. 20. Hamas said this was for “humanitarian reasons,” without elaborating.

Yocheved Lifshitz and Nurit Cooper, Israeli women in their 70s and 80s, were released Oct. 23, for what Hamas called “crushing humanitarian reasons.” Their husbands remain in captivity.

Israel said one of its soldiers who was taken in the Hamas incursion was released after a rescue operation in late October. The soldier was identified as Pvt. Ori Megidish.

Hostages confirmed dead in Gaza: At least 2

It is unclear how many of the remaining hostages are still alive.

Israel has said it discovered the bodies of two hostages — 19-year-old Cpl. Noa Marciano and Yehudit Weiss, a 65-year-old who had been taken hostage from Kibbutz Beeri — who were “murdered in captivity.” After Hamas said Marciano was killed by an Israeli strike, the Israel Defense Forces said intelligence and a “preliminary pathological report” indicated that Hamas killed Marciano after an Israeli strike wounded her. The Post could not independently verify the claim, and Israel did not provide the evidence on which it based its assessment. Hamas militants have said that some hostages have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, but they have not produced evidence that corroborates their claims.

AI-driven platform Play Anywhere launches game-changing partnership to reimagine interactive TV sports rights

0

As artificial intelligence continues to completely change the way millions of fans interact with live sporting events, a platform is introducing an innovative approach to monetization.

Technology company Play Anywhere has developed a proven track record of increasing fan engagement and creating new revenue streams for its partners. The technology can be seemingly integrated into mobile devices, connected televisions or various streaming devices.

For instance, a particular sponsor or advertiser may require an on-screen click-to-purchase option for merchandise during an NFL game, or a company could discover that fans are seeking a more tailored and personalized experience. In either instance, Play Anywhere’s technology is well-versed in creating revenue paths.

The emergence of more and more AI-powered technologies has opened the door for a whole new experience for those who decide to partake in sports betting.

Machine learning algorithms can be leverage to allow various sportsbooks to analyze a given bettor’s patterns and interests to show them personalized recommendations. As a result, users are given a variety of new tools that they otherwise would not have without the technology.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

The Play Anywhere platform is also optimized for integration with a wide variety of sportsbooks, giving users the ability to make same-screen bets in real time. Play Anywhere CEO Yaacov Ben-Yaacov said the company is essentially bringing companies into its revenue ecosystem.

“It is a global exclusive deal across all mediums,” Ben-Yaacov said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“That means, if anyone wants to do interactivity, they must put the Play Anywhere compliance and accounting platform in. You can now have these rights at no extra cost, and here’s the way you can implement them. It’s about creating an ecosystem.”

When media-rights holders use the Play Anywhere platform, they are quickly given the ability to offer significantly enhanced viewer experiences.

“We defined a new rights package called Interactive Rights,” Ben-Yaacov said. “It basically includes live, VOD (video on demand) or highlight clips coupled with contextual or interactive ads that allow betting or purchasing or have QR codes. We allow the rightsholders to have those rights, but we define the compliance layer, who gets the money and so forth.”

AI-powered algorithms have the ability to analyze a live sporting event in real time and quickly adjust to give bettors the most up-to-date and dynamic experience possible. Often, traditional methods do not always necessarily provide bettors with the opportunity to place wagers on specific outcomes as a game unfolds.

When enjoyed in moderation and when spending limits are put in place, sports wagering gambling can be a fun and exciting way to enjoy a game. However, it is important that players are aware of the importance of responsible gambling.

Sports leagues’ fundamental views as it relates to interactive rights are essential. Ben-Yaacov says interactive rights should be held in the same regard as traditional media rights.

“In the same way that they had to put DRM onto streaming, they have to put compliance and accounting onto interactivity,” he said. “The good news with Play Anywhere is, they’re not going to be charged up front like they are on a DRM platform. And, since the league is in the same interactive bucket as the rightsholder, the rightsholder gets a cut of revenues.”
