ACC Reports Safety and Sustainability Gains Through Responsible Care Program

New Responsible Care performance data from the American Chemistry Council shows measurable reductions in emissions and energy intensity, highlighting continued progress in safety, transparency, and environmental stewardship across the U.S. chemical industry.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has announced new Responsible Care® performance results, underscoring the chemical industry’s actions to enhance transparency and continually improve safety and sustainability.

Since 2017, ACC member companies have achieved measurable progress across key environmental indicators:

  • 14% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity
  • 5% reduction in energy intensity
  • 39% reduction in sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions intensity
  • 15% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions intensity
  • 6% reduction in hazardous air pollutants (HAPs)

“These results illustrate how Responsible Care companies continue to lead as responsible stewards of the environment, while supporting U.S. jobs and delivering innovative products that make everyday life healthier, safer, and more sustainable,” said Mitch Toomey, Vice President of Sustainability and Responsible Care at ACC.

Responsible Care is the chemical industry’s global initiative to improve health, safety, environmental performance, and security. As a condition of membership in ACC, companies implement Responsible Care by applying rigorous standards, sharing exemplary practices, and driving measurable progress across their operations and supply chains.

In addition to emissions reductions and energy efficiency gains, Responsible Care data also shows continued progress in water stewardship, supported by enhancements to how the program defines and reports water use. These reporting refinements aim to provide an accurate picture of consumption in the chemical industry and highlight the industry’s focus on responsible resource management. By strengthening reporting processes, Responsible Care is advancing transparent reporting of clear, credible data and building trust with stakeholders and the public.

“A strong U.S. economy starts with chemistry, and through Responsible Care, our industry is advancing innovative chemistries that deliver progress for both people and the planet. By cutting waste and emissions, we are helping to boost efficiency and keep products and energy within reach for American families,” said Chris Jahn, President and CEO of ACC.
