As soft-spoken as he was, he was always seen in tailored, clean cuts, and minimal fits. His signature look of a Gandhi strait jacket and a crisp blue turban was something that he was known for.
In an earlier interview, Tarun Tahiliani spoke about Manmohan Singh’s wardrobe. He mentioned how the political leader focused more on functionality rather than style. He said, “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s clothes are mostly functional rather than crisp. And this functionality aids him in the onerous job of running the nation.” Singh was always seen in crisp white cotton kurtas with the top buttons closed.
His personal style was safe and functional. Classic pieces like kurtas and Nehru jackets made up his wardrobe. It was easy to transition between formal meetings and formal lunches with dignitaries with this utilitarian wardrobe. Singh always donned a blue turban which was his trademark. In a nation where vibrant colours hold deep cultural significance, he opted for an understated, refined, and dignified style. The colour represented the colour of Cambridge which was his alma mater. In 2006, he visited the University of Cambridge and gave a speech at the Senate House. He said, “The colour light blue is one of my favourites and is often seen on my head.”
