PPP’s Awais Qadir Shah elected Sindh Assembly speaker



KARACHI – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Syed Awais Qadir Shah was elected as new speaker of Sindh Assembly. 

Shah secured 111 votes to defeat Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) Sofia Saeed, who got only 36 votes. 

After the results of the secret balloting were announced, outgoing Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani administered oath to his successor. 

Anthony Naveed Becomes Deputy Speaker

The newly-elected speaker initiated the process for election of the deputy speaker of Sindh Assembly. 

The PPP candidate Anthony Naveed emerged victorious with 111 votes while the MQM-P’s nominee got only 36 votes. 

Bialwal-led PPP secured 84 seats in Sindh, followed by MQM-Pakistan which secured 28 seats, while 14 seats were won by independent candidates. 

Oath-taking ceremony in Sindh also witnessed protests by Jamaat-e-Islami, GDA, JUI, and other parties who flocked to the provincial assembly in protest against election rigging.
